Dewalt's New 20V Atomic Line

Was recently in a local Home Depot and found the new combo kit for $179. I decided to buy one to compare it to my current 20V brushless drill and impact at work and see how they compare. I have only had time to get pictures of the Impacts but will get some of the drills tomorrow if time permits.

Now as for performance of the Atomic impact (DCF809) I compared it to a DCF787 and my everyday user the DCF887. After testing the Atomic out I found it was on par with the 887 and both could drive screws and lags at a similar speed. Now the 787 was about 5 seconds slower in driving the same screws and lags.

The main selling point Dewalt has for the Atomic line is how compact they are. In the pictures below the Atomic (DCF809) is roughly 1/2" shorter overall from the back of the motor case to the chuck compared to the other two. One other thing I noticed is that it is taller overall. Roughly by 3/8" - 1/2". Finally the motor housing is wider than the other two impacts.

I have the older 12v set that looks very similar to that one and I've been very happy with it. I've had them for maybe 10 years and the batteries are still good. I have more powerful cordless drills/drivers but sometimes the lighter more compact ones work better in limited space. I was always impressed with how strong they are for only 12v.

I would expect that 20v compact set to be even better unless something has changed with DeWalt quality over the last few years.

Interesting. From what I've read the speculation is that these will be more powerful than the "basic" brushed 20V tools, but less powerful than the brushless XR stuff? So slotting in between them in performance, but also more compact?

I wonder if this is signalling the beginning of the end of the DeWalt 12V line? I read somewhere else that these tools like identical to current 12V tools in dimensions, just different internals and more power. I can't verify that though. And not sure there would be room / demand for that many variations on the same tools (a "basic" 20V driver, plus the brushless, plus the Atomic, plus the 12V, etc). It would seem the Atomic line might have the positive attributes of the 12V line, with more power and battery compatibility for the majority that don't own the 12V tools.

I ended up getting the M18 fuel impact over the 887 work uses cause they are like 2 inches shorter. I was interested on the Atomic setup but it's still longer than the M18
