what are some quality made diagonal cutters. I'm a auto trimmer and use diagonal cutter to remove hog rings. most cutters have cheap grips. they loosen after short periods of use. I constantly have to adjust grips. also hard handles inflame arthritis in hands , so a soft grip pair would be nice. any suggestions? thanks Auto trimmer

Honestly, I like my Channellocks. The handle is not as thick as others, but they are nice. I also liked the old Craftsman Pro's but they don't make those anymore. The only way to get a good set new is to buy Klein or go over to the German side of things, which are nice but pricey...

Then look for NWS or Knipex, real nice set. I also have the Kleins and they are nice too.

Knipex comfort handles... available at Lowes. They're my favorite by FAR. And I own a lot of them. Knipex, Channellock (several pairs), Craftsman (several pairs), etc. Got mine for 25$ and I couldn't be more happy with them. If you can afford Kleins or the other German brands, go for those as well

Mine have held up very well. I mostly cut steel wire and whatnot and the jaws are still fresh. The grips? Haven't even moved a bit. I try to pull them off sometimes.. doesn't really work out too well lol.

Hog ring removal = 8" Knipex mini bolt cutter. They offer both std grip and comfort grip.
And...Hog ring installation application = OEM hog ring pliers, a modded Channel Lock slip-joint plier with a wiz wheel or zip ties if cheap. :)

For most tools if used for industry in that area, I suggest Knipex or NWS and have first hand experience in areas including custom work as well as armor and Gov't and mil spec vehicle and high end auto trim work.

Feel free to PM me if you need info.

thats a good idea too !

They´re very easy on your hands, and you only need very light pressure to cut through anything

available in straight and bent

Monte, aren't those bottom two also compound action cutters? That would also dramatically reduce the effort needed to make a cut.

all 3 are compound action cutters !

the cutting effort is reduced by 50% or so (compared to regular high leverage cutters)

Get the mini bolt cutters.
Insane strength is a strong point for Knipex tools. I use my standard 8" cutters to mutilate fenders regularly.

For hogrings I use my 8" knipex diagonals, the bolt cutters would be too bulky imho. I don't have the comfort grip ones, but it couldn't hurt. and too easy to cut instead of grab.

Auto Trimmer, I too am a motor trimmer, and I hear you that a good pair of cutters is essential. My preference for the last 7-8 years has been my 10inch Knipex 72-02-250 diagonal cutter. The best I've used, and the leverage they produce makes it comfortable enough to use all day every day.

thanks for all the replies. I'm looking at the knipex and nws. the knipex handles look more comfortable. also new hogrings are thinner than old style hogrings. so a bolt cutter would be overkill. thanks again everyone.this is a really usefull site. Auto trimmer

I got a pair of Snap-on 87CF from a member on here and I really like them. I've always used Klein but these have more leverage and much more comfortable handles.

Keep in mind that diag. cutters all have their limit on wire size and type of cutting. Thus why I suggested bolt cutters.

For copper wire, I'll use diag. cutters all day long.
Hog ring size and wire ga. vary from mfgr to mfgr as well as the older vehicles are often more stout when it comes to rings.

Using a wrong tool will not only not cut the ring but also damage your tool and cost you money to buy a replacement. I have a drawer full of buggered cutters from co-workers and dumbasses that tried to cut too hardened of a matl. with the wrong nips.

Caveat Emptor.

When I swapped my cloth seat covers in my truck for Katzkin leather covers. I used snap ring pliers to remove the hog rings, it worked great. It basically did the opposite of what the hog ring pliers do. I just spread them apart with the snap ring pliers and pulled the hog ring out with my finger or used needle nose pliers for the ones I couldn't reach with my fingers.

I just installed heated seats in my Wrangler, and had to remove a bunch of hog rings. I slipped a pair of needle nose expanding pliers in the ring, gave a squeeze, and the ring was open. Less chance of snipping the wrong thing, but if the ring was closed tightly this wouldn't be possible.

My go-to set of diagonal cutters is one I have from Proto. It's nice and thin, with a relatively shallow angle, but I had to plasti-dip the grips myself. :(

The secret to leverage in regular diagonal cutters (not compound; I can't stand spring loaded handles, or compound pliers, it's a personal issue), is how short the jaws are.
My Channellock's jaws are way too long, so you get no leverage out at the tip, and the closest the jaws get to the pivot point is double the distance from my Proto's, so for cutting wire at the inside of the jaws, the Proto has twice the leverage.

Monte did I ever tell you that I think you know wayyyy too much?

only a few things about tools and the multiplication table :)

German make really nice tools. Those ribs on the NWS cutter. It is just for look or it there some functions to it?

design...

the ribs on the inside have a function though: So a (big) cable can´t slip out

Yeah but why haven't they farmed all their production out to the Chinese yet? Don't they wanna boost their profits? :D

"Made in Germany", quality and innovation boosts the profit
