Diagonal cutters

I need to add a couple sets of cutters to the stable. First, I need some long reach, narrow and low profile cutters for tight spaces. Something with the compound action like the crescent X2's would be nice. I just haven't seen quite what I'm looking for.

Second, I need to bridge the gap between my 6" Channellock diagonals and my Cobolts. I'm looking at these Kleins or these NWS Irwins. At the moment, I can actually get either pair new for $20. I bought the NWS Irwin offset needle nose today and I'm really impressed with them, so even though I'm a Klein fan, and don't care for comfort grips, I'm leaning towards the Irwins. What say you?

Get these versions of Klein cutters. I have them and I can cut door lock actuator rods no problem. The Klein 2000 series cutters are among the best out there. Certainly the best I have used.

Those look good. They appear to be rated for harder material than the Kleins I'd linked to.

Yes they are. But they still do regular wire and zip ties etc just fine. I have had them for about 4 years now and still sharp and cut like new. Plus USA made. Some here bag on Klein claiming declined quality but my favorite pliers are all Klein.

Get Knipex. They are the best I've ever used. Better than Klein or Snap On.

A bit bulkier than what I had in mind, I wonder if cutters have to be bulky at that length to mitigate the flex.

I highly suggest the 10" angled knipex paired with a regular 6" dykes for maximum versatility. The angled can pry nails and staples while still reaching into stuff.

I see no need for the 8" dykes unless you got wear a tool belt and have to compromise for weight reasons. Even then I'd get an angled pair over straights.

I'm surprised the NWS are getting no love. From what I can tell, they're comparable quality to the Knipex stuff I own.

I was going to buy a set of the Knipex, but after checking them out in the store I left fairly unimpressed compared to my older Craftsman set. However, I've never actually owned them so I'm not as experienced as some.

I also prefer my Klein lineman pliers to the Knipex ones.

That said I do love the Knipex mini bolt cutters. They are the only Knipex product I've had that I've really been impressed with so far.

I picked up some NOS Western Forge from HJE a few months ago, a 6" and an 8".

I own the angled Knipex side cutters, very quality tool. I also like that it will cut electrical tape all the way across the roll, not that they won't cut through something tougher. The angle helps from grinding your knuckles across your work piece.

I never see it mentioned either, but I have had great experiences with Proto side cutters and they are worth whatever money - though I paid $2 for mine!!

I do have a pair of Klein dykes that are still holding up great, but if I was buying again I'd only look at Knipex or NWS. Superior quality, in my opinion. I went through 2 or 3 pairs of Klein linesmans that I hated, and when I got my Knipex I couldn't believe the quality difference.

I own Knipex 10", Klein angle head 2000 series 8", Irwin/NWS Powerslot 8", Channellock 7", and Crescent 6". The Channellock and Crescent are ok. The Klein and Knipex are both amazing. The Irwin/NWS I haven't used yet but they feel solid.

For cutters I'd look hard at knipex...they will cut paper and nails, so good all around tools

Knipex, NWS, Klein.. I have them all and many more.. For less money, the crescent compound cutters are ******* great.. They have the best head design for cutting with the tips, are lightweight and have spring loaded handles.. They are not a life long tool, the springs do eventually break, but the jaws are very strong and their shape/design is one of the best..
10" Knipex are great long reach too. They are the same as the 8" just with longer handles. Beware of some higher leverage cutters too. The extra leverage comes at a sacrafice of jaw opening.. Channellock has the softest jaws of the group.. They don't last on hard material.

Knipex 8" are my goto set.. They are what I carry. I don't have the regular NWS, just the fantastico. I will be getting them soon, but they will be on par with the Knipex for sure.. Klein is slightly beneath them, but not by much.

Don't get the fantastico unless you have a specific need to cut really hard, thin material. Your hands have to open and close ALOT just for average cuts, and the jaws don't open wide.. The leverage is pretty amazing though.

Crescent compound cutters (these are the apex versions. Crescents are blue handled) they have matching needle nose, and lineman pliers too. They are not at all alike to the Dewalt versions like these. The dewalts are horrible, I have both. - check eBay for the crescent version, or Sears.

The crescent pivot pro's are actually pretty good too. They are the same as the gearwrench I believe..

If you want Klein, get these. They are the HD versions with the higher strength jaws. I'd still go Knipex / NWS before these though.
