Dial indicator holder?

In my service truck I have a dial indicator that we use to check end play on wheel hubs. The new one I got is from snapon and has a different base that is not just a magnet you turn on and off. It has metal "forks" I'm assuming you form to the inside of if spindle? I tried for quite a bit today and could not get that sob to work correctly can anyone enlighten me on how this is used?

No, it looks similar to the electro magnetic style but it has these pins that push out the bottom with a standard magnet in the base, with a lever to lock the pins in
