I have both a 4.5 innch and 7 inch grinder. I have an outdoor patio that I wish to strip off the paint. If I buy a Diamabrush from Home Depot for $70.00 - $85.00 how much coverage should it be able to remove before it needs to be replaced. I've got about 500sf. Last time I Used a wire brush and cup wire brush with the grinder but it took soooo long.

Also, If this is outside, and I use a mask, do I need a dust collector?

Hi, I just finished a project very similar to yours, and it was 306 square feet. I used the
7 inch Diamabrush hand tool and shroud, and the blades totally wore out by the end, but I was dealing with a very think coat of Olympic Rescue it, so with yours just being paint I think you will be fine with one Diamabrush. I had contacted the company before hand and this is what they said:
"Thank you for your inquiry on the Diamabrush website. Diamabrush tools (including the 7” hand tool) are to be used on interior hard-troweled smooth concrete. The life of the 7” blades is approximately 2K-3K sq. ft. before the blades need to be replaced. If used on exterior broom-finished concrete (like a sidewalk or patio), you will wear down the blades at an excessive rate. It will remove the coating (it will knock down the broom-finish), but you will burn up blades very quickly. Please be advised. There are some customers that have used our tool on broom-finsihed concrete because it is the fastest solution on the market, but it will burn your blades up very quickly."
Also, it creates a substantial amount of dust even with the shroud and vacuum, but mostly once the bag in the vacuum starts to fill. When starting with a new bag in the vacuum, there isn't much dust, but it fills quickly and it starts to kick out under the shroud and you don't want to breathe that concrete dust in. I went through 6 vacuum bags, all of which broke in the shop vac and were maybe half filled.
I will be selling the shroud, grinder, and additional Ridgid grinding cup which are barely used if you are interested.

According to the manufacturer the 4.5" tool should do about 1,500 sq. ft. and the 7" tool should do about 3,000 sq. ft.

You need to pay CLOSE attention to their speed suggestions AND you need to let the tool do the work. Running the blade to fast or applying to much or uneven pressure, you will run through it quick. We do offer the Diamabrush products and free shipping, but if you need it right a way and HD has it in stock, that is often your best bet.

Experience will tell you that those numbers are theoretical and for smooth concrete. Any type of coating or high point in the surface will take them down big time.

Biggest issue is that people tend to heel the tool over and put pressure on one side vs. even pressure. If the tool wears out on the edge first the pressure was not correct.

It's a great tool but you need to treat it differently than a cup wheel or abrasive wheel.

For such a large area why wouldn't you simply use the large Diamabrush that attaches to a Floor cleaner? It will take a lot less time. Plus, you can rent them from most Home Depot stores.

I've dealt with diamabrush for a couple of years. We rent them on our 7" hand grinder, just like what someone said before it depends on the speed and also the pressure you push down on the grinder. I have used it for coatings removal and mastic removal. We typically get about 500-750 sqft for a set of blades. It works great for mastic and light coatings like paint and water based epoxies but not so great on 100% solids.
