I vote Carhartt. Can't say I have owned a dickies jacket, but in general my opinion would be Dickies for shirts/ uniforms and Carhartt for outerwear. Love my jackets.

I personally like Dickies. Used to skatebaord in the stuff all the time and have loved the brand ever since.

Check out the Dickies® Sanded Duck Sherpa-Lined Hooded Work Jacket.

JC Penny has it 40% off right now online as well I believe.

I’ve seen that jacket before , it is hooded but doesn’t mention anything for rain .

I have a Carhartt nylon coat and I love it. I don't remember if they claim it is specifically waterproof but water just beads off the nylon.

I have both. I'd say I like them equally but use them differently. Carhartt coat and jacket. Dickies snowsuit type outerwear. I wouldn't hesitate to buy either if it was what I needed.

I have had both Carhartt and Dickies pants and shirts, and at least for me, the Carhartt stuff is much more durable. I have several Carhartt jackets, 3 without hoods and 2 with hoods and they have all held up well for years. The oldest jacket, without hood, is about ready to be retired. It's probably close to 20 years old. Good luck with your decision.

Majority of my clothes are Dickies, and are usualy my first stop if im buying regular clothes. my main cold weather jacket is a lined Dickies Eisenhower, but my thermal lined zip up sweatshirts get alot of use this time of year. I've had a few carhartt jackets over the years, and were good quality, i just prefer the fit (and usually price) of dickies over carhartt.

Like Think, i might just prefer them a bit since i grew up with the brand through skateboarding, music and that sort of scene

Yeah, I like the CE Schmidt from Tractors Supply. I also have Walls insulated overalls for working in snow and they are warm. I can't comment on there durability yet though because I've only had them a couple months.

Sitting here at the computer wearing my Dickies hooded black canvas jacket with quilted nylon lining. Have the same type of jacket by Carhartt with a fleece style lining. Both are great. I've been wearing the Carhartt more this winter but that's just because the Dickies one was hiding on the back of a door.

Sadly, the Dickies jacket was made in China. My Carhartt was made in mexico (which is ok by me). I have some Frost King insulated overalls and Walls insulated coveralls. The Walls were given to me about 20 years ago by my boys as a Christmas present and have held up well.

Personally, I think they all are pretty good. I'd say Carhartt hands down if it were made in USA, but most of their stuff is not and I'm not one for paying a big premium for a brand that has become something of a fashion item in recent years.

I have had both and find arborwear outerwear to blow them both out of the water. In my opinion you're cheating yourself if you don't find a local dealer and check out their jackets and winter gear. You can tell it's made by people who actually work outside in the cold doing physical work.

The hood on my Carhartt is 2X too big; I never use it and just took it off. I think it's designed for wearing a hard hat or fire helmet under it. Other than that the coat itself is top notch. It's an insulated brown canvas duck, and way too warm for SoCal. Maybe their lighter rainproof stuff has different (smaller) hoods.

I've worn Carhartts for years, needed a new one 2 years ago, tried a couple and sent both back, very tight under the arms, definitely can't layer underneath - wherever made now they're not the same.

Tried a Duluth from their catalog - love it! Fantastic fit and quality, check em out.

I have a lot of different style coats, jackets, whatever, but a few years ago I bought a Carhartt rain coat and wear that often. The standard Carhatt and Dickies jackets are too stiff to wear enjoyably while driving and even working sometimes. The rain coat is thin and flexible. Wore it today actually in the snow/sleet. Just put a sweatshirt on underneath and the jacket on top. Serves as the wind/water barrier. I believe it is the Carhartt Shoreline Jacket. Just food for thought....

I vote for Carhartt! Especially for outerwear! I wear Carhartt pants and shirts everyday. They last a very long time!
Their newer rain gear is great. I have two of their waterproof jackets.

I’m gonna agree ^^^

Carhartt jackets are overrated in my opinion and have gone down hill over the years.
I’ve had 3 or 4 thru the years they don’t wear well and are far from water resistant.

I wear Carhartt pants all the time. They are ok but not what they use to be either...

I’ll second the suggestion of arborware, and Duluth And add Filson to the mix.

I have dickies insulated coveralls that my employer issued 6/13/2007 and they are tuff and comfy.....also have 4 carhartt jackets that no matter how many times you wash them they are stiffer than a concrete pecker.....it feels like you can't put your head back because of the stiff hood.....but very durable

The older Carhartt is hands down better in regards winter wear IMO. If you want to spend some Money and can find a available outlet, WICK outerwear is fantastic.

Have an 18 yr old carhartt blanket lined jacket that's been washed probably 50-60 times and only half as stiff as a concrete pecker but has worn like a concrete pecker too. Other than the hole in the sleeve from a slag pop it's awesome. Also have a Carhartt FR jacket that is as comfortable as a flannel shirt, and a new Carhartt winter sherpa lined coat that is much softer than the cotton duck.
Forgot to mention the Walls hooded, sherpa lined jacket that is really comfortable and warm and I just can't seem to hurt that jacket.
Buy a Carhartt cotton duck jacket and you'll be able to put it in your will.

Isn’t the cotton duck jacket really warm ? Maybe too warm for Socal . Is it a heavy weight jacket ? How does it do with the rain ?

I prefer Carhartt. The fit is better on me (I'm tall) and they seem to wear better. The jackets I buy are still Made in USA, though much of the stuff is now Mexico/etc. All of the Dickies stuff available locally seems to be made overseas.

The new line of sherpa lined jackets are really warm definitely a winter coat. Not sure about its water resistance

Carhartt.

I have the jacket listed, and shown below. I probably bought it almost 10 years ago, and it's been great. It doesn't come with a hood, but has buttons on the underside of the collar to attach one for an additional 18 bucks.

I much prefer the look, and feel to this one over the traditional hooded Carhartt. And in dark brown, is hasn't faded at all like my brothers identical black Carhartt. The sleeves are still cuffed on the inside, but the bottom isn't. Just much nicer looking and more comfortable.

Ive had both and the Carhartt stuff just last longer. When I was first starting out I had Dickies because they were cheaper but they seemed to wear out much faster than my dads Carhartt stuff so I switched and never looked back. He is still using a set of insulated coveralls from 1989, they have the 100th anniversary patch on them.

I've always wanted a carhartt. I have dickies jackets and they seem bulky making it hard to move at times. But since I am also in so cal, the jacket might get worn a dozen times a year so I've just been sticking it out with the dickies jackets and a beanie. I suppose if I lived up in big bear or something like that I might put more effort into getting a better jacket lol

Carhartt over dickies. Their heavy weight duck cotton jackets are still made in the USA. Their sandstone jackets (less stiff) are made in Mexico. I have both, I wear them for work all the time in the winter. Kept up for the last three years in an industrial setting. The fit really depends on your frame not your height. I see some short guys fill out a carhartt that are built like an ox. And some tall guys that looks like they’re wearing a cotton bubble cause their shoulders are small and they have long skinny legs. Also if you got a big gut carhartt has plenty of room.

I had dickies before and it seems like their jackets don’t compare to their pants. I had a dickies jacket and the buttons stopped clicking and would just come undone on the sleeve.

An old boss I had, had a carhartt denim Sherpa lined jacket that looked as old as me at the time (22). It still looked good and he didn’t baby it or anything. We worked on ships oil coolers and would always be filthy at the end of the day. All he did was throw it in the wash.

OldSchool made-in-USA Carhartt jacket is my favorite and I own several different variants. if a jacket is needed when I am treasure hunting in the wild I'll wear an older Dickies jacket because of the fluidity of movement it allows me when picking.

Carhartt, Carhartt, Carhartt... For jackets, bibs, the sandstone(?) material is the way to go.

Best part, or a big difference is Carhartt stuff comes in actual sizes, like the bibs for example, instead of just coming in large, x large, and such.

I buy the store brand knock off Car Hart from Academy. They're extremely durable and the end of season closeouts are fantastic. I buy several in my size.

I get overheated and leave them behind never to be seen again.

Make sure you get the quilted liner rather than the sheeps fur/Fuzzy strand liner. The quilted is much warmer. I have both. Both are great for rain though and keep you bone dry
