You need a poll in the thread about what is condition it will be in upon arrival after the box smashers get done with it... :)

This has got to be one of the top Plomb Collectibles of all. No self respecting Plomb Tool Collector should be without one of these boxes. Call me when it arrives I want to see it too you lucky dog.

Post the condition when you receive it, please.

Are you going to restore it?

Are you CRAZY? It is in original condition. I am going to pack it down after I set it on my 46 Rolla Bench

I believe it gets here wed. I will post the pictures before and after a nice scrubbing:thumbup:

Well I was running around with my buddy OLDJACKS looking for doors with no luck, so we went to my house to steal two original 1" 3/8 solid doors(shhh). I was expecting the Tool Box today and when we got here it was sitting on the step side ways in a pieced together box, however the seller used styro foam corners +++ and the box was safe and sound. I needed OLDJACKS help getting it in the garage. The Box is solid as a rock. It came with a giant tray( not correct) that was unexpected and most of the original drawer dividers. I snapped these after a quick wash.

This top box is in a league of it's own seemingly better built than their regular bottom rollaway box. I have owned two Plomb bottom boxes and one of these big top boxes at various times during my collecting years. In some respects this box even outshines some older Snap-on boxes I have owned too with better utilization of space and more room to place odd sized tools.

Great find and a box that will hold it's value for years to come.

Holy cow that's a good looking setup.... I'd like to see some shots of the drawers with the dividers and such. Does the "SET No." actually have a part # after it?

Well, if tool box markings followed hand tool markings, then it would be after 1938, (The end of the "Los Angeles" period.) It sure looks earlier though. With it's art deco-ish lines, I'd guess mid thirties or so...

Does it have a date code stamped anywhere?

I'm intrigued by the depth of the top tray section (You would not want this thing too high...), and the bottom gap looks like it had a Kennedy style "tilt up" drawer cover.

Are there pins for this when the top is down?

I want one...

EDIT: p.s. Glad it got there without getting crunched!

This Plvmb Item is between 42-47. The manual I saw listed it as Temporarily discontinued. The corners are cut, bent and brazed together. I will show you the dividers and the details on construction in a few days. There is no number on the sticker. I am only guessing from reading the manul, but they would have marked it with a slightly different number then 9998 because you could have bought a full set of PLVMB tools and the box as a set or just the box. The manual shows both

There is a good chance that this box is post-war given the color and painted on logo. I don't know if anyone has researched this completely as Plomb went through a few different color permutations over the years. Some were crinkle or hammertone finished and others had ordinary paint finishes. Can anyone confirm that they might have used a red finish on pre-war boxes?

What did you use to wash it with? When dealing with older painted items I am always concerned about loosing or damaging any of the original paint and especially any decals that may be present.

I always use simple green full strength with a plastic bristle brush and SCRUB. I stay away from the logos or give em a quick wipe. wd40 after gives it a nice sheen and shine otherwise rubbing compound and wax after
