Did I mess up my compressor

I was using my California Air Tools 5510A compressor to paint with my HVLP sprayer yesterday. The compressor is a bit underpowered. I also used a 16AWG extension cord.

The compressor worked fine for a while, then it wouldn’t kick back on to fill the tank. I turned it off, waited 10 minutes and turned it back on. It worked. Then it would not start after 2 minutes of usage. I plugged it in direct to the outlet and the above cycle repeated. It runs for about 1-2 minutes and then shuts off. And the motor area is super hot.

Did i damage something with the extension cord?

Sounds like the thermal overload kicked. Let it cool off completely, then try again. If it continues to kick off, then either your motor is worn out and overheating, or the thermal switch is damaged from the heat.

Oh btw this compressor is basically new. Used it to install some crown and base moulding.

less than 4 months old. And very light usage.

I think that your extension cord is under sized and causing voltage drop equating to higher amp draw. You might want to use a #12.

Check that the unloader valve bleeds out the air from the line from the pump. You should hear a hiss after the motor shuts off.

do they sell 16 guge extension cords? Not too sure.... but anyways.

Go take a look at your owner's manual maybe ?

There is no thermal over load / cutoff switch accessible or normally replaceable/serviceable items for this compressor, smaller motor like these might be embedded to the coils instead of separate replaceable fuse....... .... it's under 4 months old, go call those people up and claim that warranty if it is an issue while you still can.


Not even sure about unloader valve thing, if his motor stops running and getting hot...

One thing is easy to test right... open the drain valve, run the compressor and see if it stops with no pressure for 10-15 minus? did the motor get hot? probably too hot? bad motor?

If motor is not the problem?

run it and see at what pressure it builds up to before it stop... this might be that pressure switch problem... if it cutoff before pressure setting.



There is a whole sections on trouble shooting there... not sure if any one over the internet would know your exact issue though...

Look at pages 5,10 and the trouble shooting section.of the owners manual, it cautions against using less that 14g extension longer than 25'. So yes you could have damaged your motor.

All the standard cheap big box store extensions are 16 gauge.

Never seen one, even the Cheap HF ones I have are 14gauge.... the outer shell is cheap, wire is 14ga and fine...

Either case, if OP messed up the thermo cutoff safety fuse, or possibility the winding, he'll be better off sending it to be warranty/ repaired.... I have 1/10 of a chance fixing those or finding a right fuse even when I opened up the motor.... if it is the winding like my fan motor, fuhgeddaboudit...


Testing is the same right, run it for 15 minutes with no load, if it gets hot and stops it's the fuse, if it just don't run, it could be the fuse or winding...

That manual for his compressor didn't specify it as high draw.. only 8.5AMP-ish.... I wouldn't consider that high amp at all...
