In this area, I would have happily paid more than $500 for the pair. If that did not work I would not be hesitant to go as high as a grand for the pair. 30 years ago, I paid over $400 for an anvil. I got it in an auction at Pacific IHC Trucks. I was offered $1000 for the anvil.
You made a very good deal.

There was a South Bend 9 inch lathe with a quick change gear box at the auction. The lathe was is such terrible condition. The bed looked like it was used as an anvil. Two guys got into a bidding war over the lathe. The lathe was finally hammered down by, the auctioneer, at $400.
One of the best auction deals I have made was $25 for a wood box full of Ingersoll T30 parts. The box contained a complete set of parts and included a complete rebuild kit. I assembled the compressor and it has been running reliably for a decade. The tank and controls were another deal.
