You did just fine. That's a lot of storage and a well made box. A new set of castors can be picked up cheep at HF.

You did good, the question to ask yourself is "Where are you going to get the same quality today?" I highly doubt that you will find a comparable good box for even 4 times the cost of that one. Sure your box will will need somethings but in my eye once in your garage it likely will not be moved much. I would say if you want to replace the casters to do it the instant you can before you put any tools in it as if you wait once you put all your tools in the box they all have to come right back out so you can tip the box over to install the new casters.

Chad, I agree with others, this isn't a 'you ****' kind of deal (which is high praise around here) but it's a good deal. They will serve you well for many years. I have 3 Kennedy boxes, and I like them just fine.

I'd say you did well. Kennedy's are expensive new, but most folks don't pay a lot for them used, mostly for the same reason. The slides **** if you have any kind of weight in the drawers. Your set looks to be in pretty nice shape. Did you get the front panel for the top chest?

I have several Kennedy machinist's chests and a hip-roof, I bought a replacement front from the factory for one.

The 11-drawer top box has a solid-exterior but hollow construction piece that slides underneath the lowest box drawer, when the top is closed, and it's placed in-front of the drawers, it's locked in-place for moving the entire box. Yours isn't apparently present in the slot.

I once had a Kennedy carpenter's toolbox, too.

I've made a lot of money buying and selling Kennedy boxes with collapsed casters. They are very well made, but machinists do not move their boxes around much. For that reason Kennedy gets away with extremely weak bottom plates. Before you attach new casters be sure you reinforce the bottom Ideally you would use 1/8" steel but unless you are moving it around on rough surfaces, 1/2" plywood will likely be enough.

I've seen/used this exact Kennedy setup before (not mine), and based on that experience I think you got a great deal. I would have paid even $500 without hesitation, and I don't even need the storage. The top 11 drawer chest alone would be close to that new.

I'll say it, YOU ****!!

I would have jumped on that in a heartbeat, Kennedy's are some of the best boxes money can buy, side boxes are always in short supply, that 11 drawer is on my short list, I could go on, but you get the point.

My thoughts as well....

Not sure why guys are saying you did good......when fact you ******* scored.....especially from a pawn shop.

Those gauges are worth a few bucks....to the right person. New, some of them are several hundred dollars. Put them on flee bay.....but do your research first....

That was a you **** for the boxes, for sure...kinda a goofy setup with the side boxes stacked like that, but you could work around it, especially at that price point.

Indicators don't have much value...the Starrett 196 probably $40-50. The Federal may be worth $30, Mitutoyo calipers about the same. Maybe $20 for 2" range dial (these prices assume everything functions properly, id be leery of all the grit on everything. Other indicators are all Chinesium, not much value however good to keep as beaters/backups.
Still, with the boxes for that price, you did well.

i dont know what mongloid owned this stuff before me but he was an embarrassment to the blue collar worker. ive never seen such lack of care on items. most of the indicators lenses are melted or damaged (im thinking from welding splatter), hand tools are rusted up, etc. there are a lot of good usable tools, but its appalling.

There's a guy in Illinois that repairs indicators and makes them look and function like new. I can't remember his name right now...Adam Booth (Abom 79) uses him.

Great price. That stuff was probably 5 times the price at least when it was new.

And the real value, of course, is in the using of it. Being able to better store your tools where they're easy to find when you need them. That saves time, and time is money. Tools and storage are chump change when you consider how much money you're saving by doing a lot of repairs yourself. Just one of the many repairs you do yourself saves enough money to pay for those boxes.

I scored today using the OfferUp app. I bought a nearly mint Proto portable box for $10. He wanted $15 but agreed to $10. It's a pretty large box -- about 30 inches wide. And he even threw in a mint Craftsman box too (for free).
