Cast Iron. No quick action. Good vice, but lighter than most of the American 8" vices by a good margin. The most useful thing about it IME is that the wide jaws and relatively narrow slide mean that it'll hold fairly large-section long items vertically. Not something for being beaten on with big hammers, since it's "only" CI, but it will give a lifetime of non-abusive service in a "normal" workshop environment. I use one at work.

I don't think you could get one as nice as that in the UK for less. The No8 are not that common.

If it's made in England then you did well, production switched to Asian made sometime after Irwin bought them
