I've seen the wheels and mandrels at Ace and other hardware stores (look in the drill bit section). I personally don't like using a cutoff wheel on a normal die grinder due to the lack of a guard. I've got a couple of really ugly scars from a cutting wheel coming apart that remind me those guards and dedicated cutoff tools exist for a reason

The first thing I do to a cutoff wheel/grinder is take off the guard. It ALWAYS gets in the way. Wear glasses, and stay out of the line of fire.
I have, however, had to remove a few pieces of cutoff wheel out of my shoulder a few times.

That in itself says it all, leave the guard on should be the message.

Leave the guard on. Now on the table saw, that is a different strory. I pulled a piece of a cut off wheel out of me. Do not laugh, it hurt like hell. I also lose regard for the line of fire when I get into a job. Keep the guard on.

Its simple buy an actual cut off tool with the guard then have your regular die grinder for the things that cant blow up.

die grinder=not a cut off wheel.

Amazes me how many people out there really don't realize they are two separate tools.

Attachment for cutoff wheel=cutoff wheel
Attachment for die grinder=carbide burrs, roloc disks, sanding rolls, and other devices for smoothing/cleaning.

I like guards, learn to use them to advantage. Some tools are so cheap I get them for specialty applications.

A cutoff wheel will not get into the tight spaces it needs to go with a guard. Think bodywork/metalwork where you cannot remove the part, or where you are changing cutting positions, and don't want to **** with moving the guard every few minutes - it gets old quick. Been a while since I've blown one up.

Me either and I've been at it about as long as you. I've inadvertently spun up some pretty buggered-up/off-center discs over the years too.

I've seen a disk blow up and hit someone's hardhat. Actually happened a few weeks ago. Now I always stay out of the line of fire.

Yep. Me too but I don't use guards. If you wear protection and don't get in the line of fire, you'll be fine.

I got my mandrel at grainger.

I do agree that guards need to be used but like said before there are just times that it gets in the way. I have only had one blade blow up and hit me in the leg. I have been using my die grinder for 10 years. A few blades a week. So I guess the odds are really low.

In over 20 years I've only had 2 cutting discs blow up on me - one just left some shrapnel marks on my forearm, the other left a foot long gash across my shoulder a few inches from being in line with my face.

2 times doesn't sound like strong odds for a repeat, but I don't like gambling with that sort of pain.

I have grinders with and without guards, and try to use the guarded when possible, but I agree guards just get in the way too often on both grinders and cutoff tools.

I use cutoff wheels on my grinder as well but the small cutoff tools have their place.

I've only blown 2-3 discs in 30 or so years myself, but I also probably have less hours in than some here.

I agree cutoff wheels for cutoff tools (and grinders when possible), use a die grinder for it's intended purpose.

I seriously don't seen how anyone who uses grinders and cutoff wheels for auto body restoration could leave a guard on. I always use 1mm disks on a 5 1/2" grinder and modified a cheap 3" cuttoff witha mandrel to take my worn down disks. I have had probably 3 disks let go this year, and probably 5 in total, each time I knew it was going to happen as I had to side load the disk to get them into a tight spot.
Having watched friends use grinders I would safely say that 90% + of cutting disk failures would be from tool/disk abuse.
