I had a 753 Bobcat leaking antifreeze from the thermostat housing. The alternator tensioner bracket runs through the housing. The bolt holding that bracket came loose putting a small hole in it so it was leaking badly. The thermostat housing was cast aluminum. After tearing the antifreeze reservoir, hydraulic filter, and muffler off the Bobcat the thermostat housing nuts (studs held it on) were still extremely confined. I needed to grind part of the housing away to get to the last nut so I made this. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1362096312.230480.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1362096340.141874.jpgI have done it before in the past, but this time one of the shop kids stopped and told me it was one of the greatest things he had ever seen so I though I would bring it to you guys in case you run into this problem. All I used was a regular 1/4 collet die grinder, a 1/4" spade drill bit extension, and a carbide bur. I understand this is not rocket science and isn't a miracle by any means, but it is something they don't teach you in school. Also Very Very important the extension needs to be extremely STRAIT. Any bend will break your die grinder being that they are not made to spin at 3200 rpm.

Does anyone know of an actual extension made for die grinders either 1/4" collet or 1/8" collet adapters. I use die grinder burrs a lot.

I understand there are extended die grinders but except for a 1/4" drill bit extension I don't think there is an extension for a die grinder. I had looked thoroughly until I tried this. I just wanted to share it once I had learned about it's unusual value. I was surprised to learn there was no such product. So I should have taken another angle and tried to capitalize on my idea but instead would rather share my concept because drill bit extensions on the expensive side are 3-10 dollars.

Shafts have "critical speeds" (RPM). Long thin shafts operated at unsafe speeds invite "shaft whip" and mayhem usually follows.

I've been using those 1/4" shaft extenders for years but you can no longer find the type that use set screws to hold the tool anymore, everyone has gone to the quick release type holder. As for letting the shaft get away from you, I use leather gloves to hold and support the shaft while working with it. It only occasionally gets too warm :)
