Die Grinder help

Hi,

I'm looking to buy a couple of die grinders, i find myself borrowing other peoples at work almost daily.

I previously at another job used 3m Roloc brush discs for general cleaning work on blocks etc when doing head gaskets, water pumps etc.

The holder for them use a 6mm shank.

The Snap on die grinders i am looking to buy use a 1/4 collett which is pretty damn close to 6mm

I gather a 6mm shank will fit a 1/4 collett ?

Maybe, Maybe Not.

Most routers and grinders I'm familiar with have separate collets for 1/4" and 6mm.

I'm not sure which grinder or collets you're considering, but if you check this parts list, there are separate part numbers for 6mm and 1/4" collets. This is the same for 3mm and 1/8" collets which have a smaller size difference. It might work in a pinch but is not ideal.

No 1/4 is 6.3 mm a 1/4 will slide in the collet but not further than the slots.

I took my metric collets and ran a 1/4 end mill through on the metal lathe to hone them out to fit they were cheapo china die grinders with no other collet option.

This is my first die grinder purchase so im a little confused.

Say i buy a SO grinder with a 1/4 collett which is equal to 6.35mm

Will a Roloc disc holder with a 6mm shank not fit ? I gather you have some way of tightening whatever is fitted into the collett ?

Collets have a certain amount of flex, but the flex varies with the design of the collet.

If the collet size is just over that of the tool arbor size, you may be able to use a slightly larger collet to hold the tool. The collet won't be able to grip the tool arbor as well when using an oversized collet, so if you are doing something where you are applying high pressure with the grinder, it's possible that the arbor will slip in the collet.

If you're intent on purchasing the Snap-On grinder, it would be better to estimate the cost of the extra 6mm collet into the purchase price. You can always purchase the grinder then purchase the collet later if you find the tool slipping in the collet.

Collets are generally not tolerant of any more than +/- .010" and even that ***** (edit: highly unlikely +.010 would even slide in). Anything going into a collet for precision work should be more like + .001 and -.002.

.236 vs .250 is a lot in collet-land.

You might wanna omit what u use Rolocs for before the thread degrades into warnings.

I been down this road. Of course things com in all sizes but this 30S 1/4 collet unit from HD has been super and its rebadged the world over, its a white box standard. It has power and will out wear 10 of the HF 9 $ ones and almost as good as a good one and the operator couldn't ell the difference.
Here are my pics and you can get them other places for about 10$ more. Farmhand at TSC has some of the models as does HF and maybe Sears and at fleas.
These 3 are really stars at the right price. That's the second sander in a career and I abused the first chap one and put a bearing I already had in this one but the 4 inch right angle I use on cutting and wire wheel. Super, not 1 thing ever wrong with them and we got a couple we run a lot like a rented mule.
I had a guy run one for 2 months once, cant tell from the day he started, not so much as a loose screw.
I like electric with common 1/4 wheels as its so much cheaper but for specialty work these are real tools. You can pay 10X for them too but there is absolutely no need.

7 inch with 36 grit disk. Ultimate cheap fast rust cutter smoother, can vary the load pressure and speed. Doesn't toss hard chunks of wheel like a grinder. I like right angle for cut off too as well as wire, it shoots the dross at a right angle away from the operator and not so tempted to be in the line of sight of the wheel.
