I got the basic ir right angle die grinder. Don't remember exactly but I think I payed no more than $70 new long long time ago. It's still going and does the job just fine.

youre talking about the 4 1/2 in one right? i use to praise my hf ones untill they both crapped out on me at the same time... luckily i snagged the bosch ones up from the lowes deal for like 70 for 2.. although they are bigger and heavier than my HF ones, they are meannnn. im looking around to pick up a few more but waiting on some deals to come by... if lowes still has em the bosch 2 pack is an awesome upgrade

Wasn't that bosch deal for electric angle grinders? I think the OP is looking for an air die grinder (the kind that use 1/4" shank bits)

I have a straight grinder and a 90° grinder, both from CP. I think the numbers are CP7556 (straight) and CP7562 (90°). I've had them over 2 years and they see daily use. Co-worker has a CP7563 with the 120° head, had it even longer than mine. They are quiet, decent power and don't get very cold since they have rubber on the bodies. Not too expensive... ~$50/ea.

Whatever you end up getting... oil it often and it'll last a long time.

I have a snapon 1/4" die grinder that works ok. I've had it for several years now and it still works. If i did it again, I would probably buy an IR grinder instead. I think the quality is the same if not better and probably cheaper. Just my .02

I have a basic IR one that's been working great for me for a few years. The only thing I regret is not buying one with the rubber coating. It gets very cold. If I didn't already have mine, this is the one i'd get. http://www.tooltopia.com/sunex-tools-sx5203.aspx

Haven't found any reviews anywhere, but I really like sunex stuff so I'd take the risk. Either that or one from, ingersoll rand, chicago pneumatic, or aircat.

Budget?

Unlimited? Dotco, Atlas Copco or Sioux industrial

Hi? Snap-on, IR

Economy? Florida Pneumatic (USA made) Sioux commercial (Japanese made)

Cheap? You already know that answer and what happens.....

dr, I was just rating them by cost. Unlimited cost, high cost, economy models and cheap. I THINK that FP still makes a die grinder here but I haven't checked in a few years. If they still do, it is a good grinder for the money at a lower cost than IR or Snap-on. Most of their lower end tools are chiwainese.

Far as I know, most of their USA stuff is quite expensive, competitive in price with Dotco and Atlas Copco. Lots with the "universal tool" branding on it.

This just recently came up in a previous topic when JayL bought a taiwan souix air die grinder for $60 and was surprised. USA doesn't really make many if any air tools for under a few hundred dollars.

x3 for anything IR. I've got a couple low-end and a couple mid-range IR die grinders and I like them all.

I was looking for them last night. I knew they advertised that they didn't require lube. For a production-quality unit to claim lubrication not required, really says something in my book.

Somewhat turned off by the lower than usual power specs and lack of mini angled units.

Then the 2nd issue. When an automotive tech says "die grinder" he is almost 100% of the time either talking about a cutoff tool or an angled unit for gasket prep. Almost never talking about a straight unit or even a grinding attachment. I once went around asking for a carbide burr and everybody looked at me all stupid because they have no idea what that is.

Then they ask me for a die grinder and I have to ask "do you REALLY want a die grinder? or a cutoff wheel? You want a roloc pad?" They get all bent out of shape saying "don't give me a hard time, you know what I mean". Actually, no I do not, what do you want? Usually it's a cutoff tool they are asking for.

I ended up buying a used Snap On PT200 (straight die grinder) and a Silver Eagle SE355 (90 deg) used off eBay.

I originally got the Ingersoll Rand 3108 and 3102 sets new, but they didn't feel right, and had no speed control on the handle--so I returned them. I'm sure a lot of their stuff is okay, but those two were extremely disappointing for me.

I have the matco mt2880 die grinder and the mt2883 angle grinder. both.5 hp work good dont get cold and have speed controls on the body. Had them for about a year now in a body shop so they see a lot of use. Matco had a deal on them buy the die get the angle free. Only down side is the angle grinder has a grease fitting and requires a mini grease gun they try to sell you but i just always talk my dealer into greasing it for free.

I have a Mac from the early 90's that works great. I would recommend an IR though. They make the best air tools out there for the money imo.

I'm pretty happy with my Matco 2883.

Just wish I had a bigger compressor to get the full potential.
