Hey all. I've been a fan of this site for quite a while. I thought I'd post my project that I started May of 2010. It's been a long-term build, mostly since I've paid cash as I've gone along. No loans at all.

So, you ready? I live in beautiful southern Oregon. This is the part of the state that doesn't get rain. LOL. I'm about 25 miles from the California border.

I guess I should post a pic of the plan, so ya'll know what the heck it is that I'm building. It's 35 x 22' — roughly 800sf on each level, with a 10 x 22' deck on one side. And, I will eventually build a 10 x 22' room addition on the West side. I'll end up with 1980sf total space indoor/outdoor.

Here's a pic of two (of 8, or 9, can't keep track) of my VWs. (This is the reason we all build garages, right?)

The red car on the right is a '63 VW 1500, commonly known as a Notchback — these were never officially sold in the US, but were in Canada. Mine has a 2332cc fuel injected motor running all MSD ignition. It has factory option Porsche Pedrini wheels (Made in Italy).

The white car on the left is a '66 VW Variant, commonly known as a Squareback — these were sold in the US, but this one was sold in Europe, not sure where yet, and is actually fairly rare as it has a one year only Pigalle all red interior. Rumor has it that there were 1000 to 1500 of these made as Squarebacks and Fastbacks. There's a running list of these on a VW site, and so far only about 60 are accounted for. It's all stock, except for the repro Porsche wheels.

The roof was a little over engineered. But, it's fairly shallow at a 4/12 pitch. We couldn't use engineered trusses because of the dormers. And, I wanted the option of doing a slightly different roof ridge that was open with windows, I think it's called a monitor roof, requiring it to support a lot more weight.

But, I had to cut my budget, and all of the windows... But left the structure so that I could maybe do it as a faux monitor roof in the future...

Too funny. I think I actually posed for this pic... It's been a while, and I can't remember. I did use a hammer. Several times! But, mostly we used a nail gun.

This was the first building that I've built from the ground up! Thanks to my dad's neighbor Nick, I had great help and guidance. He's been building since the 70s.

You must have lenient zoning codes , judging by the height of the build and the proximity of your neighbors .

I figured this would come up. We went back and spoke with the neighbors behind us before we started. They said no problem, we're never home. We killed 50% of their view. They are retired, and travel 11 months of the year.

BTW, the city had no regulations regarding the height, except for set back. There's a crazy formula, and in order to build where I wanted, I had to drop the second story walls down to 6'. That is why I have the 4 dormers up top. It opened up a lot more usable space. I built to the max square foot that I could, that's why I ended up with a weird 22 x 35' footprint. If I could have build a bigger footprint, I would have.

Its a 2074cc 78x92's making about 180 hp 13.5 c/r Berg crank berg heads 48 IDA's very old school stuff only wheelstands like that when its down on power but makes for cool pictures
