I've got one and I like it. When I was looking even the HF one seemed to hover around $100. I think I got mine for $70 or $80 just from a local Sears ad. I don't use it much but it's worked fine when needed. I love not having to pull another truck close to a vehicle around the property and then dig out jumper cables.

What voltage level does it charge at? Can't seem to find any mention of it in the owner's manual.

What do charge at 40a rate? Prius?

This is a 12v charger (and perhaps 24v), a Prius would have a much higher voltage battery bank.

For my deep cycles I usually figure 20-35% of their capacity in amp-hours, which is about 220ah a battery. So even at 20% that covers the 40A with only a single group 29 battery.

The start a car is a sort of thing, unless its got a booster battery generally it will only do a faster charge followed by a very short 50 to 100 amp boost, which starts a car only if the battery will hold something of a charge.

At this point I would prefer a decent battery charger and a jump pack instead of some giant empty box roll around.

Those "empty box" wheeled chargers are not just empty boxes for no good reason. They are high amperage charger/starters that need the extra space for heat dissipation and cooling.

I just picked mine up today. When I got home, there was a damaged corner of the sheet metal, but nothing to drive another 30 mins to replace. The charger is very basic, as you would expect from a roll around. The 2 and 40 amp settings can be used continuously, while the 200 amp can be used for 5 seconds with a 240 second break between uses. I am assuming this means you can crank your car for 5 seconds (which in reality is a long time). The unit is pretty solid. The only thing I really found cheap about it is that the wheels are blow molded hard plastic, kinda like tool cases, except a hell of a lot thinner.

Overall, I think it is worth the $60. I would most likely not have paid double that. I still think it is a good deal for $60, even for $80.

And to those who are curious.... Made in Mexico

I might have been interested in this had I seen it in time. The only downside is the manual shut off requirement.

As far as jump boxes, I've never owned one, but the few times people have tried using one to jump one of my vehicles, they have never worked.
