Diehl Grinder - No Capacitor?

Just picked up this grinder. Doesn't run, only hums and will spin if I help it. That tells me possibly a start capacitor problem. It does "click" when it slows down. I haven't cracked it open yet, but is it possible they didn't use a capacitor? I don't even see where one would be screwed to on the underside...

did you pull the front cover? looks like there's plenty of room in that housing for a small cap.

Took it apart today, no capacitor. I cleaned the wires, new power chord, screwed a few things together that were loose and it runs good... but it takes like 3 minutes to stop after turning it off.... I guess that could be normal, right? The capacitor only helps it get to speed, it doesn't help it stop in any way, does it?

I have to respectfully disagree on the long spin down being good. Within reason, that's certainly true. But three minutes is a loooong time. If it takes that long, then the bearings probably have no functional lube left. They're easy to replace, and some sealed or shielded bearings can be carefully opened and repacked with grease. I'd replace them if spin down is that long. Once you get the bearings off the shafts, my guess is that you'll feel a lot of roughness as you turn them by hand.

And, you're correct, the capacitor doesn't help the grinder stop spinning.

the capacitor generates the second phase that provides rotation. unless it's some other kind of motor. it could be a very small capacitor.
