Diesel engine to hydraulic pump

So I’ve got a project I’ve been bouncing around in my head, hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I want to build a log splitter using a small diesel, a 3 cylinder kubota, yanmar or something along those lines. My stump grinder has a Kubota 1105 with a hydraulic pump mounted to it, however that’s more of an secondary thing, as the pump is just used to control hydraulics and the majority of the power goes to the wheel via belt.

I know I’m going to need bellhousing/adapters to get from the crank to whatever pump I go with, I’m guessing I will need a clutch in between? Something similar to a chipper where the clutch is contained in the bell housing, just on a smaller scale? Thanks in advance for any help. (And yes I’m looking for this to be very overbuilt and overpowered in GJ fashion).

A 2 cyl refer or genset unit off a semi would probably get you by

Love joy coupler. Getting your pump Mo bred to bellhousing is the hardest part but can be fabbed

The genset engines have the cooling pack all built in, so makes it easy adaptation.
I acutally need to do this and have a light tower complete setup that would be perfect other then weight. The unit will be fairly heavy by time your done

What size log are you planning to split that you think you are going to need a three cylinder diesel engine? Those are 20-30HP no? There are single cylinder diesels available. Even Princess Auto sold Chinese one affordablely with electric start. Sorry that is past tense unfortunately. what type of input shaft does the hydraulic pump have? sae spline? straight keyed shaft?
you may need a "overhung load adapter"

Probably much easier to just pick up a used single cylinder Yanmar powered portable hydraulic power pack from whatever and use that.

You need to figure out what SAE number bellhousing will fit, find the correct flange adapter for the pump and the correct coupling that will bolt to the flywheel, and adapt the shafts as well as dampen the connection. Bucket trucks I used to own had 3cyl gas kubota engines adapted to hydraulic pumps as an auxiliary power source for the boom.

Assuming there is no electrical power available, another approach would be to buy a used diesel generator and an electro/hydraulic pump, as the generator might be otherwise useful.

It might be easier to drive off of the balancer end of the crankshaft.

Hell, I split 30"x18" oak with a 5hp....
