Hello Tool lovers,

This weekend Im going to go check out a diesel generator, I think its this one, but I cant be sure as all the stickers have been removed from the one I will be looking at.

The guy claims that it runs well and that it has 44hrs.
Does anyone have experience with this generator?
Any other things I should check besides oil, air filter, and that it puts out power?

Thanks all for the help!

Hello I would check and make sure it has a fuel filter along with oil and air. inspect as much as you can. Let him start it up and see how long it takes to start. Diesels are little more complicated then gas. They use higher compression to start unlike a spark plug ignition on gas.

I'd suggest that you take along a portable 1500w resistance heater for a load check.

^^^ THIS. and IF you buy it, use the same heater when you run the genset every month or two for at least 15 mins.

Nothing worse that pulling out a genset when you need it only to find it won't work.

I'd be a little Leary of it. Why are the stickers missing? Why does he want to sell it with 44 hours? The page you linked says it has a "legendary" G390 engine. Googling that only shows that gen set or a gas engine. Buy a generator you can count on. That one looks like it got sold out of the back of a pickup truck.

That is a Chinese clone of a Yanmar diesel. Some of the clones are good. Some are garbage.

That is really, really sound advice. Get it running for more than 30 seconds too with load. If it starts smoking you'll have your answer.

Second this. Let that heater run for a little while while you bs about the unit. Let the entire gen set warm up, see if it keeps producing steady power. Plug in a light bulb (incandescent) and watch for any significant variation.

DVOM for a voltage check?

DING DING DING!

Those are sold under a ton of different made up company names, no support for parts, and even the best we've had come through the shop are lucky to hold 3-3.5kW on a load bank, never even 100 hours on them.
