What I have at work now. Due to limited space for tool boxes, I have my classic 60 and kra 62 at work and my krl1022 at home. The red one isn't really laying on its side.:lol_hitti

Which way do you prefer it? You like the 1022 at home or like working out of the smaller boxes. Probably have the 60/62 set up where you don't tell much difference

It's what fits the bill. At work, the classic 60 is maxing out the space I have for a box. Our boxes are kept in the office inside the shop so space is limited. My combo is about a tie with my lead's mac tech 1000 for biggest box, otherwise everybody eles has 26" craftsman stack. Not that I'd be too worried about it, but having a SO box at work is a bit of showboating, to have my krl at work would just be a pain between storing it and may make it a theft target. The only thing is it would be kinda nice just to have a flat surface to set stuff on my box, but thats what the tech 1000 is for. He is such a pack rat with so much **** on top, he nevet notices when you add something. Its nice having my main set of tools at home with all the side work I do.

my new box for work, picked up the bottom a few weeks ago and built everything else over last week or two, moving out of two other boxes and into this hopefully this week.

So you have to pack your tools from a office out to each piece of equipment you are working on? I can see where you wouldn't want everyone using your krl as a workbench either. You have to admit it is a nice box to have for home use tho.

Thanks! And that was 3 years ago -- I've added a bit since then!

3 boxes 2 hour lunches and a hour of wrenching a day sounds like someone has it made.:lol_hitti seriously though good for you, you don't acquire a set up like that over night. Sure you worked very hard to get it, and still love that color btw:beer:

It's not bad, most of the time, I'm maybe 20 ft at the most from my box, our shop isnt huge. Plus a lot of repetitive repairs it easy to grab what you need first trip. Worse case, I have a tool tray I can load up.

Below are a couple very old pictures of our shop from the year after we built it (2009). Office and bathroom as well as many other things have been added since this time.

A couple duramax projects. Headgaskets and transmission rebuild. Two of the most common things I end up doing. Done 8 or 9 sets of HG's now. Not too bad to do. I enjoy re-doing Allisons.

Below are some pictures of my tools. They are somewhat a hobby/passion of mine. I could get by with much less of some things, and lower quality of other things, but I like the comfort, peace of mind and ease of work that comes with good tools. I bought the majority of my tools in 2010, bought a house last year and remodeled it so most of the money went to that, getting married this year, but finding a little extra to add to my Knipex collection and replace my craftsman drivers with Wiha. All of the tools I replace with better ones I take home for stuff around the house. Most of the tools I bought new, I got a couple from ebay and such though. The box I picked up for only $2,900.

More Knipex on the way to replace the craftsman pliers, and expand on my precision snap ring pliers collection. Love those things.

The rest of the drawers are drivers and some other tools. Have some Wiha on the way to replace them, I'm sure some thread later on pics will end up there.

07 T600 KW w/cat. Main truck for hauling milk from both of our farms. We also have an 01 Freightliner that goes in the fields with the apron trailer and hauls feed around. It hauls milk when needed. The trailer is being replaced by a new Trail King Super Hi-Lite ag belt. The truck was about to be replaced by a newer KW, but as I was looking for trucks it decided to break a ring, so we just got it back from getting an overhaul and will run it another year or so.

some of the GPS we use. This is the one in our mower tractor. Our new corn planted has all of the row shut offs and variable rate drives as well to further increase efficiency.

I hope he is doing well, he had cancer and haven't seen him on here in a long time. A check of his profile says he was on here on 10-22-16, just hasn't posted since June.

I was just thinking the other day that it has been a while since he has posted a project in the diesel mechanic forum. Hope all is well.

Who makes that box for CAT ? My friend has a smaller one but it sure isn't snap on.

They used to be made by wright/snap on. I think it's someone else now. Mine isn't a real cat box. It's a box from strictlytoolboxes.com that I just added decals to

Question:

For a diesel technology major looking to build a box what is the most logical approach?

Tool cart or tool chest?

I have a 270pc craftsman socket set, 66 pc craftsman wrench set, oil filter wrenches and a few miscellaneous tools. Its my last semester so im going to take advantage of the snap on SEP (ratchets, breaker bars, torque wrenches, prybars, picks, needle nose pliers.)

Just picked up this combo a few weeks ago. Used my student 50% off discount. I'll post more pics as I build my tool set.

What are you currently working out of in school?

In my experience, a cart is good to have right out of school. Most shops will start you out doing PMs/service and wheeling a big box around from bay to bay for each job is no fun.

It does all depend on where you end up. I know a couple of guys that were moved into service trucks (myself included), and now they have big empty boxes in the corner of the shop.

Thanks for the in depth response.

Running my own Medium/light duty diesel business is my ultimate goal but I'm applying for some heavy duty internships right out of school for experience.

At school we have lots of Mac and harbor freight carts for our sockets and wrenches. They have the big moldy cases taking up a lot of unnecessary space but there's a tool room where we check out most of the tools.

The PM point is somthing I was looking over. I'm glad I asked

Thanks.

I picked up this blue point flip top cart from another tech. Removing all his stickers and cleaning it up before I move some tools over.
