Difference between Quad **** and MHF?

Accidentally posted this in A/C originally (though it is AC )

Trolling Home Depot for the garage feeder wire, I found a couple different 2-2-2-4 direct bury spools. The classic USE MHF (but not compacted) and a new to me - URD Quad **** (compacted).
Is the difference the compacting?
Are they otherwise interchangeable?

URD is outside use only. MHF can go inside the structure because it also carries a fire resistant rated insulation. I'm surprised the MHF is not compacted conductors.
