Can anyone enlighten me as to what the difference is between the Porter Cable 7424XP and the 7346SP? The 7346SP is sold by Lowes and come with a pad for sandpaper as well as the polisher. The 7424XP comes with the polishing pad only. It appears from Porter Cables web site that they are identical units.

Porter Cable 7346SP
3.7 amp
2,500-6,000 RPM's

Porter Cable 7424XP

4.5 amp
2,500-6,800 RPM's

Everything I've read concerning the 7424XP has shown it's the tool of choice for pro detailers. Recent picked one up on the amazon sale and have been researching how to use it and the necessary accessories I'll be needing.

There used to be a 7424, PC upgraded it to the XP model. It's possible that is the old 7424 just looking at the specs.

the lowes one has a bigger backing plate, which imo is to big for detailing

If you looking for info on the 7424 check out http://www.autogeek.net/

I got one last year from them (one of the bundled kits) for detailing, saved a bunch from buying everything seperate

And if you planning on using it on the car, be warned: it's highly addictive lol, i cant seem to put it down once i get started

You are correct. The only difference is the addition of the sanding pad with the 7346SP. Buy whichever one is less expensive.

This is very common for Porter Cable. With most of their tools they update the product, and rather than start a whole different model number they keep the number the same and change the alpha numeric suffix.

For example, I happen to be a big fan of their air nailers. The 15 GA finish nailer in their lineup started out as model DA250A, then went to DA250B, and now the "C" model is out. I kind of like the system.
