At the store here, the piece of paper you take up to the cashier just has the 64458 number on it. Only the main item tag has both the 64457 and 64458 number on it. That worries me.

I'm ready to pull the trigger on a 56" here. Last week, the local HF store said they had two coming in on the weekend delivery, so I stopped in first thing Monday morning - no cabinets. No cabinets even on order for their store, for that matter.

But I talked with them about whether they could order a specific model number and that you could order one or the other off the website. They said that the only one they could get was the one that was listed on the pickup tag - the 64458 for my store.

They did say that a store about half an hour away had two in stock, so I'm going to call them today to see if I can find out what they have before driving there.

Sooooo...

Recap :

- (1/31) Ordered the 64457 online
- Spoke to Harbor Freight Rep and confirmed I would indeed receive the 64457, just as ordered

Update :

- (2/19) Box rolled up to my driveway this morning, Item number 64458 arrived :headscrat I saw that coming Haha
- Called Harbor Freight customer service and they will arrange the box to be picked up and replaced with the correct 64457

Lets try this again

Oh man HF fooked up a pretty good product with the 2 factory production .
I could see the 63358 turning up too lol .
If huge amount consumers get wind of different specs HF going have right headache and rightly so, sloppy retail practise as they not really bothered about the small quality details and it one of their top recognised lines so you think they be more smart with the manufacture arrangements .

I was afraid of that... I haven't had any luck tracking down a 64457 locally and all the stores are telling me the 64458 is the only one they can order. Considering the differences, it's probably cheaper for HF so that is why they're getting them instead of the 64457.

I called my store today and they just got one 64457 in and have (2) tops #64456. I believe from reading the posts that is the better top also. Can anyone confirm that? They have the bottom on sale for $649 so now is the time to grab it. I just wanted to be sure that it is the better top. This thread has been great. Thank you

Yeah 64456 is the better top. My store had one on display so I could confirm. I posted that info 2 pages ago.

Keep up the hunt guys! The search/wait is worth the upgraded box. I purchased the 64456 and 57 at two separate stores 45 minutes apart. Got the 14.5'' side box too. Absolutely love it.

Which is the “Good” number for the 56” in Blue?

I’m only seeing one item number for the 56” bottom in blue, and it’s the 64864. I did a HF website comparison of the user manuals, and the 64864 manual is the same as the lesser quality black 64458 model. Only way to be absolutely sure would be to compare one in the store, but based on user manuals, I’m betting on the only blue model to be the lesser quality version. Hopefully HF will eventually come out with a second item number from the other factory.

I am loving this thread. I went to HF today to look at a 26" wide top chest. Funny thing is that it looked deeper than my old Crapftsman base cabinet. So I didn't buy, but measured when I got home.
Fast forward - looking at the specs on the website for the alternate item numbers I see the weights are a good bit different for each. And there seem to be two item numbers for most all of their cabinets.
My theory on this "two-item-number" thing is that they try to leverage the two manufacturers agains each other. But to make things even more confusing is that the customer reviews for the items that LOOK ALIKE are both listed under each of the items with no distinction as to which review belongs to which item number.
Still - this is a good reminder to perform your due diligence.

Anyone happen to know which red 44" is better? Would it be safe to assume the lowest number?
Also there are 3 different blue 44"s, two of them were compared earlier in this thread but does anyone know about the third one?

That’s good news. I’m still not finding the 64866 on their website, but HF is slow to update at times. Since HF only uses two factories for the 56”, my bet is that the 64866 will be the better box. Just speculation at this point though, and will need to be confirmed once these get into circulation.

Re: Differences between HF 56" Series 2 boxes w/different item numbers

i’m assuming this is true for carts as well, ive noticed only the green, yellow and orange have 2 different part numbers. one factory using 64*** and the other using 56***. but the blue red and black all start with 64***. and the blue cart only has one part number. i’m interested in the green cart and would have to assume the 64721 part number is the better cart. can anyone confirm?

The Freight may have got the first delivery wrong but they made it right in the end. Overall a pretty smooth, seamless transaction (return and all) with polite and responsive customer support from HF reps.

The 64457 has arrived

I didn't have an extra hand to help get it off the pallet so I took out all drawers to make it a bit more manageable. Gave me an opportunity to take a further look and the build looked great inside and out. Couldn't be happier

This should be confirmation, at this date in time, that specific item numbers can be requested with online orders specifically. You may just have to deal with a return when they get the first shipment wrong.:headscrat I personally wasn't in a rush so it didn't bother me much

I was told the same thing - that they can only order the number that is on the "ticket" they have on the display. In my case, that is only the 64458 black model - not the 64457 one that I want.

I've been holding off, hoping that the 64457 model would become more available. The local store had a 64457 as the display, but I was in this week and it had disappeared. I wonder if a customer convinced them to sell it and order in a new one or if an employee did it.

Shipping will cost me an extra $100, but I'm figuring it is worth it to get the one I want. ElusiveKandyDC ordered one, got a 64458, but eventually got the one he wanted. Anyone else have luck ordering a 64457?

So I tried to order the blue 64865 and 64866 from my store and they said they could only get the 63 and 64 models in the presale and there was no way to order the unit specific without ordering online. Anyone else run into this problem?

That's what people seem to be running into.

Don’t get me wrong even the lower models of these us general boxes are still way better that the craftsman or any of the other ones at the big box stores.

I stopped by HF today, and thanks to this thread knew what I was looking at to compare the boxes. The 56" box on display was a 64457 (56" black) and without another 56" to compare I was trying to find similarities with the 44" units (black, blue and red).

I found that that the 64457 on the back of the drawers had two small rivets holding the locking tab to the back edge of the drawer. Compared to the 44", the 64134 (44" red) had this too, same style and build quality features. The 44" 64442 (44" black) and 64445 (44" blue) had a different style, metal tab poking through the rear of the drawer.

Anyone happen to know which red 44" is better? Would it be safe to assume the lowest number?

I hope to do a SteveO bench style and haven’t seen any in yellow.... thinking about painting the frame either a light gray or maybe a tan/ brown.... I need to do some samples to see what pops

Re: Differences between HF 56" Series 2 boxes w/different item numbers

The HF closest to me had only one of the blue 56 cabinet I wanted, and it just happened to be the “better” version with the bigger latches, drawer detents, wider drawer tops, and rubbery work surface. I can confirm that the part number for this version of the 56 in blue is 64866:

Thanks for confirming that. I've been looking for a 56" blue. I was at 3 stores and all they had were the lesser red or black. It's good to know these actually do exist.

Bought a 56" blue bottom last night, got it home and realized that it had both the detent and the latches after investigating them since I heard the latches were a problem on these, found this thread and realized I lucked out and got the right bottom number 64866, same as above. Will have to figure out which blue top is the better one when I go to buy that as well.

Hi, I bought two 44" red bottom cabinets a few weeks ago #64134 then I ordered another so I could use 8 of the shallow drawers in the two top cabinets, and then sell the rest of the drawers and slides . When the third bottom came in it was a #64281 and it was the difference like in the pics of the red and blue drawers. When I tried to switch the drawers between the two model numbers they were off by a 1/4 inch i put it back on my truck and took it back. You can see it in the pics where the slides come through the drawer its 1/4 inch different. I think the 64134 is the better cabinet, just trying to find another one. Walt

Here's pics of two different numbered 44" box drawer ledges that I took at one of my stores yesterday. Though showing 44" boxes, the ledge size differences on the two different numbered 56" boxes are very similar.

Can someone give me an answer on which box is better? Aside for the drawer measurements what else can I look for that will confirm I am buying the better 44 box?

Also if someone really wants to help me what model numbers do I want to buy for the green or orange 44 boxes? I am buying 2 boxes, what model numbers should I state I want?

Do I basically look for the two aluminum silver rivets in the rear of a drawer? That's the best?

Cafe,

It looks like the green and orange 44's only have one sku each so I think you will get what they have.

In 44, black and blue have 3 sku's and red has 2.

So unless something in the differences makes you want to reconsider your color choice, it looks like you are good to go.

Good luck.

I would rather get blue if that meant I get less flimsy drawers... I might get blue... Can someone please answer the question I am outside of a harbor freight looking at these in person right now! It would be helpful to know what I'm looking for.

Is the lower # sku better?
Is the color matched piece of bent metal at the rear center of a drawer better than the 2 rivets, how about the 2 rivets holding a silver plate the size of a quarter?
Is the full length drawer pull out better or worse?

Please!
