I didn't notice a difference in steel gage when fooling around with them, but I did notice the full extension slides versus those without. I would get the box with the full extension slides.

I would rather get blue if that meant I get less flimsy drawers... I might get blue... Can someone please answer the question I am outside of a harbor freight looking at these in person right now! It would be helpful to know what I'm looking for.

Is the lower # sku better?
Is the color matched piece of bent metal at the rear center of a drawer better than the 2 rivets, how about the 2 rivets holding a silver plate the size of a quarter?
Is the full length drawer pull out better or worse?

Please!
The 44" blue box with full extension drawers (very good in my experience) is 64445 - that's the one I owned when I had a 44" box.

Re: Differences between HF 56" Series 2 boxes w/different item numbers

If I had it to do again I would definitely make sure to get both with item # 64457. I feel it is the better of the two. FAR BETTER! It just feels much more solid and heavy duty.

What are the red and blue version #'s of the 64457 ?

Do the drawers extend all the way out on the 64457 ?

56” Blue: 64866
56” Red: 64164

These numbers are according to previous posts by other members.
The drawers do not fully extend.

I stumbled on this thread because I was noticing the same differences as mentioned everywhere else in this thread. But there was a lot more info in here than I already figured out and you guys were a huge help. Today I just landed a set of the "better" 56" red upper and lower combos (64135 and 64146) and it was well worth it. Huge difference between them and the other model numbers at my local HF.

But one thing I did realize, is that ALL of the cabinets have the detent rubbers installed. The problem with the "worse" cabinets is that the drawer mounted slides aren't long enough to catch the detent. Instead, the cabinet roller slide butts up against it.

The ones that have the working detent system have drawer tracks that end about 1/8" before the end of the drawer.

The ones"without detent" end about 1/2" from the end of the drawer.

Seeing as the cabinet roller tracks **** up against the detents , they might also be shaped differently than the "better" cabinets, but I had no way to confirm that.

I stumbled on this thread after ordering the 56" blue top and bottom cabinets to take advantage of black Friday coupons and an additional 10% off opening a credit card. (I have been waiting for the right moment to purchase the toolbox with that offer.) I got the two boxes for just over $1000 after all was said and done. I appreciate those that added to this thread as I would have not known that there was a differences in the boxes. I thought I would at least post my experience. When I purchased at the store, grabbed the paper tickets for the top and bottom cabinets, when to the cashier who scanned them and then I paid for them.

The boxes arrived about 2 weeks after I ordered them and to my surprise, they both had the better latches and the detents. The numbers on them are as follows:

top cabinet 64863
Bottom cabine 64864

I was happy to recieve the top and bottom box given the preferences of those who have seen both of them. The display model in the store had was the other model with the smaller drawer latches, etc. I was prepared to just live with with whatever I got since it wasn't a deal breaker for me. It sits in my garage for personal work so it is not something I use daily.

Happy holidays to everyone out there and I hope that Santa treats you all well. Be safe and healthy !!

I got the blue 56", # 64863 and 64864 a couple month ago. I also got a side cabinet. I'm very happy with it.

Just stumbled onto this discussion only AFTER I purchased my 56" (blue) roller box at HF. I panicked for a moment after reading some of the posts. Since my box is still loaded on my truck, I was ready to return, The last two posts by 'ndnchf' and 'additive' show the same SKUs as mine (64864). I just opened the box and found that my draw latches seem fine and are attached with screws (not rivets). Not really sure whether differences in SKU numbers are a problem anymore.

I just read through this thread after ordering the 64864 blue this month with the understanding that it was the lower product codes that would be better. It arrived like yours with all the good stuff. I have owned a total of (4) 56” cabinets this year and this is the only base cabinet that has had these “better” features.

I’ve also seen people mention that they’ve received multiple 56” that had the same product code, but one of them may not be the same as the rest. So, I’m bot sure if they are transitioning away from the other style or not.

This thread is so old, I’m also wondering if some of the product codes may have changed. I still see a lot of people posting the “lesser” version of these on the us General FB group, and the HFT couponers FB group etc..

Planning on purchasing another black 56" soon to accompany the one I currently have

I sure hope I can score another 64457 to match

I wouldn't be able to sleep at night having two versions right next to each other

FYI, I just noticed on the website that the green, orange, and yellow 56” are only showing one product code. The Blue, Black, and Red are still showing two product codes each.

Thought I would share...

I called every store in Southern CA with no luck finding a 64457, they all had 64458 or no inventory at all.

So I changed my mind and went looking for a blue box (64864) with the above posts stating it to be the "better" version.

Silly me I didn't open the box and check it in the store... loaded on the trailer, got it home only to be fooled... skinny latches, rivets, etc. :willy_nil

I never found the other version to feel the difference, so I will just naively tell myself it doesn't matter!

Its still a MASSIVE upgrade from what I had, and, I got it for 649 so all in all I am happy.

Side note: I think the blue looks great and brightens the whole garage and my wife even likes it :D

It sounds like perhaps there's been some mixing/matching where the specific SKUs may not matter as much anymore. I've called all the HF stores within 50 miles and no one has a 64457, but I have been able to track down a 64458. Anyone purchased one recently and noticed a difference (or not)? With the 15% off discount this weekend for ITC members, I'd love to pick one up, but would prefer the "better" box if there's still a difference.

Thanks!

I haven’t kept up with this topic, but it seems I read in another thread a while back that the differences no longer exist. HF’s website no longer separates them by the sku number, but does give four sku number options for downloading the pertaining pdf manual. Three of these sku numbers contain the 64458 number. It’s my guess that the 64457 is no longer available, but I have nothing to confirm that. Hopefully other forum members have more current info on this. Good luck on your search!

This weekend I purchased a 56" top and bottom in red. The bottom is a 64165 and it has screws to remove the latches. The drawers have detents, and yet the drawers do not come all the way out, though it doesn't bother me at all as its miles ahead of the old box I had.
The top however does not have detents and the latches are riveted.

Just a few updates for those interested currently.

Can anyone confirm that the 64165 now has the detents and better latches like the 64164? Can’t find a 64164 anywhere. 56” Red bottom. Thanks

To answer my own question. I found a store that said they had the 64164 in stock. Most of the stores said they don’t stock the large boxes anymore and you need to special order them. I got there 50 miles away. Rung it up as a 64146. Loaded it up in my truck. Then I noticed the box label said 64165. The sticker on the tool box said the same. Got it home and unloaded. To my delight, it has the better screw in locks and detents. I plan on removing the locks and wanted the detents.

Some of the stores I called said the warehouse showed 0 of the 64164 and 500 of the 64165. I think they have phased out the 64164, but now make them with the better features.

One store said that they had one of the 64164/64165 in stock on the website. I drove to the store and they said “the website isn’t right”. You might want to call a store before driving there.

I ordered a black 56" bottom a few weeks ago and they allowed me to order the 64457. When I picked it up yesterday I noticed that the part number was 64458. I was disappointed but since these are getting harder to find because the new series coming out I went ahead and took it home. Much to my surprise, even though this one was tagged 64458, it had the screws holding the side latches on and the drawers had detents. I'm not sure if they made a change at both manufactures but that was my experience.
