Hi guys, perhaps I'm missing something, but I didn't see any info on Matco's website about the differences between their 4, 5, and 6 series of chests. I am very interested in their chests, as they seem to have the best options for lots of square inches of storage (i.e., lots of shallow drawers), but I need some more info to evaluate them realistically. Can anyone help?

p.s. if anyone knows of other chests with as many shallow drawers, please let me know!

Thanks for the info. I am looking for even more detailed info if anyone has some! I discovered that Mac has some chests with lots of shallow drawers too, but they, like Matco, have zero information on their website that explains their tool chest lines. Snap On has some literature, but their boxes don't offer the drawer configurations I'm looking for.

I'm not sure what you guys put in your deeper drawers, but most everything I have will work best in a shallow drawer. What do you put in your non shallow drawers? Am I missing something?

What's cool is using the on-line configurator, where you can choose what sized drawers go where, and get it made like that.My 6s double bank dreambox I punched up had lots of wide shallow drawers in both the bottom, and then the midsection unit.( 16 drawers )
Then I added a top compartment-lid since I like all of my sockets in the top compartment so I can just grab them without opening a drawer.I liked how it ended up being low profile,I think it only was about 58 high.$11,655.00 though.....That's why it's a dreambox!
We lost our Matco guy this year so we don't have any rep around to even get one from, though. There is no extra charge to have it custom made, unlike SO.
I traded in 2 deeper drawers for 4 shallow drawers on my SO unit, and it did cost a lot, although he did a return on my used drawers as if they were new,so that was good.I didn't like reaching way in for a flat tool, and like you,I saw how much unused space there was with shallow tools in deeper drawers.

On Matco's website there is a toolbox configurator. Use it & you can see what your box will look like.

I'll tell you exactly what I tell my customers. The 4, 5, & 6 series are made at the same plant side by side. They have the same basic chest construction. They use identical metal thickness, bracing & things of that nature. The differences are in size, colors, trims, & drawer configurations. They are all powder coated not painted. Think of the differences in a Chevrolet (4s), Buick (5s), & Cadillac (6s).

The 4s is is a basic no frills box with a limited # of colors & trim. The drawers cannot be customized.

The 5s is a little bigger. Nicer aluminum trim on the handles & corner trim. A few more colors available. The drawers can be changed a little. Upgradeable casters. More add-ons available.

The 6s is the top of the line. Largest selection of box styles & sizes. Lots of colors & trim options. The drawers can even be ordered in a different color (match a sports team Harley Davidson colors). You can get pretty wild with drawer selection. Upgradeable casters & a long list of available add-ons.

Customizing the box at the time of the order cost nothing additional. Play with the tool box configurator & build the one that you like. Print the page & give it to your distributor. He can call in the information & get it done.

Dave, I recently got some slides for my 4 series box. They goofed and sent them for a 6 series box.
Those slides were WAY bigger than my 4.

I would have happily used them 6 series slides but they were almost twice as thick, thus wouldn't fit.
Had to get the 4 series, which of course matched.
How does that fit with the lack of differences?:headscrat

Things like slides & casters are different. The bigger boxes will carry more weight due to some different components. My post was mainly about the core box construction. & visible differences in the boxes.

Are the drawers in the six an inch narrower? Or do they have recesses? Or are the boxes that much wider?

Reason I ask is the slides were WAY bigger. Almost twice as thick. If there had been ANY way to mod my box to use the killer big slides I would have.:)

The 5s is bigger than the 4s
The 6s is bigger than the 5s & therefore bigger than the 4s.

4s casters are rates at 140lbs per pair
5s & 6s casters are rated at 232lbs per pair.

Wish I could have used those big slides, they are awesome.
