I have check into different ratchets and find numerous designs. Some of the ratchet designs are pear shape head, tear drop, round head, and etc. Could someone more knowledgeable tool junkies explain the advantage and disadvantages of the different ratchet designs. Thanks

I was avoiding responding, as I didn't know how it would be taken.
I have a "internal ratchets" thread going over at Papaws site. It has tons of pictures of the inside view of the different ratchets that have come across my bench with descriptions and teeth count, etc. Plus many folks have posted pics of rats they have that I don't, so, it's gotten pretty interesting. Alot of good info over there.
Quickie answer - round head rats typically have more teeth (i.e. finer action). My fav is the S-K 45170.
Pear-head rats have fewer teeth and "batman" style pawls. A bit clunkier action but very stout. I like the Indestro 6272.
Some are quick release, some not. QR is good when you can't afford to loose a socket or extension in an engine compartment. But I've always struggled with the added step and time of pushing the dang QR button to release the socket. If I had to have a QR rat, the RHFT Craftsman/EASCO's are the best.

Hope this helps.

Older round head had more teeth then pear heads. But that has change, you have 72t, 80t, 84t, 88t and 120t now in pear head. The tear drop is just a compact pear head for tighter places. It really comes down to personal preference which you prefer.

the shape of the head is only one element of ratchet design. There are round head and pear head shaped ratchets where only two pawl teeth engage the gear teeth. There are also round head and pear head ratchets where there are 7-17 teeth engaging. It varies widely by brand and floating pawl deign.
The best thing to do is to visit the different manufacturers websites. Many of them have exploded drawings of their ratchets and you can see how they're designed.

A friend who has been a working heavy equipment tech for thirty years states flatly, "There has never been a better ratchet than the round head S-K. I've worn out and broken everthing ever made and that's the best."

I'll agree with that statement. It is the same basic rugged design since 1933. Although, I think internals were improved in 1941. Patents shown below.

I guess though there are those that like the "latest and greatest" design, but it really depends upon your own uses and preferences. It's hard to argue with longevity though.

I work on heavy equipment and trucks for an industrial contractor. I have many different ratchets but I do tend to agree about S-K. I have had to do many service calls and ended up at many steel mills and refineries the most commonly used ratchet there is SK they can not be killed. I have only broken one and it was the detent ball spring wore out.
