Does anyone have any good ways to store handled tools in the garage? Brooms, shovels, etc. I’m wanting to utilize wall space and keep my floors open as much as possible.

2×4 and some 3/4-1" dowel. Drill a few holes on about a 10 degree angle and glue in dowels.

peg board is your friend
(I use the 1/4 inch thick, white "garage panels" from the big box store)
it lets you move stuff around until you get it right
I think it took over a year before mine settled down.
loops of twine through holes at the end of the handle or around the working end of a shovel or rake gives you a lot of flexabilty for hanging location

I have 5 or 6 of those, mostly in the basement. They are perfect for rakes, shovels, brooms, etc...even line trimmers and leaf blowers.

I have used combinations of most of the above. My current garage is primarily the slat wall type of organizers. They are from Gladiator, but I ordered through Home Depot.

Sorry I don’t have pics available right now. I will try to explain it.
I have a piece of aluminum “C” Channel. I bolted the flat side (back) to a stud on a slight, maybe 5 or 10 degree angle that tools with handles hang on.(Snow shovels…)
For items without handles (brooms, pinch bars, other types of shovels) I have some 24” long section of 14” or 16” diameter PVC pipe bolted to the wall. This is green pipe (I don’t know if the green means anything) I usually see this pipe as roof water drains for root tops in large open space buildings (Aircraft hangars) parking garages or under bridges.
I will see if I can run down some photos.

The mauls and sledge storage is really appealing to me. Those are an SOB on a good day.

I use this style clip. With the concave back, they can be tensioned by simply tightening the screw. Only one tool handle per clip, though.

Here is what I did. Black iron pipe and flanges mounted to 1/2 plywood and lag bolted to the studs.
My rule is no garden tools or bicycles in the garage. A small storage shed to store these garden tools is a great idea. Take a look here:

Drill a hole in the top of the handle. Pound a finish nail partially into the top plate of the wall.
For very heavy tools, put a loop of nylon twine through the hole in the handle and use a 10 penny nail. Install at a steep angle.

This might be the ticket. I’ve been kicking around one of those plastic storage cabinets for shovels etc but I just couldn’t stomach the looks of them. They’re so cheap looking. This is infinitely customizable to match our house and patio.
Yes, garden tools and bicycles are clunky to store, especially around classic cars, or even daily drivers.
There is another LARGER version of a tool shed like this that was in one of the recent issues Family Handyman. It has a materials list and instructions how to build it. I tried to look for it on-line but I could not find it. I gave the issue to my nephew because we are going to build one at his house. I will get the issue date info.

I screwed about a dozen small hooks into a piece of plywood attached to the ceiling and then into the end of each long handled tool, I screwed in a screw eye.
If you have a high ceiling, put in a wide shelf and use that.

I don't remember where I saw this idea, but I took it and ran with it. I cut a second one at half height and attached it to the lower front. Cut some pieces of wood to fit between the slats and screwed them in place to create dividers. I holds a lot of stuff neatly and because of the height, nothing has fallen out of it.

Not mine, but this is one of "systems" I have in the shed. Others are hooks, nails, and rafters.
OK, I found the Family Handyman article. They call it a "garden tool cabinet", whereas I was calling it a "tool shed". Anyways, here it is:

I ride my bike a lot (not a road bike, mtn bike fyi) and keep a few in the garage. I used the linked design for inspiration, but basically used a long 2x4 on the wall for the tires to rest on, then another 2x4 w/ aluminum L-shape to hold the pedal. I have it mounted high enough on the wall, that even at 6'2" I don't hit my head on the handlebars. So it is basically like it takes up zero space.

I went with the rubbermaid fastrack system for the few I hang in the garage. This is brooms, blower, small ladder, stuff like that. In the shed I use this for shovels, rakes and others. I just bought 20 of these to hang all my rakes, shovels etc. Once the snow disappears and they deliver my shed I am going to screw in a 2x4 along the wall and screw these in at the proper spacing to hold all the handled tools I own.
They are only $2 a piece
