it appears that the pin detent sticks out further than necessary on my old Milwaukee electric impact, making it very difficult to remove sockets. Is there an easy way to fix this? Thanks.

Use impact sockets with a hole only on one side and don't ever line up that post with the hole. If that's not a good solution, continue reading...

Can you push that button in with a finger easily? If not, try pushing some grease in there to see if it moves a little more freely.

If you line that post up with the hole you can use a punch to depress the pin to remove the socket. That is what the pin and hole are for. If you are trying to install the socket without lining up the hole the pin could be hanging in the depressions that are there for ball type retainers.

Doh! The depressions are primarily for ring type retainers. They also work well with the ball type retainers on an air ratchet.

any way to change it to a ball detent, like on a ratchet? Seems more user-friendly.

Wait until the socket comes flying off the impact and hits you in the mouth. You will appreciate the utility of the socket retaining pin. Releasing the socket with a small screwdriver or pin is a small price to pay for keeping all your teeth.

thanks, guys. I am new to this impact wrench stuff. Sounds like it is doing what is designed to do. I agree that I would rather have the socket impacting the nut I am trying to remove, rather than my face!

IF it is a variable speed impact, set it on minimum torque setting and often it will release if you hold the socket in your hand with a bit of removal pressure on it and barely tap the trigger.

You are correct that it is doing what it is designed to do. You have an industrial tool there that is ment for few socket changes, vs the mechanics tool with a ball that is ment for quick changes.
