How much should a good quality digital caliper for the average hobbyist be?

fraction display might be useful to some but decimal + tap & drill chart on the wall is more useful. what if it's 0.251" ?

Also I would save up for a Mitutoyo instead. Worth the extra.

Since woodworking is done in fractions, and for slinging around on the table saw, this is worth the money. Even if it turns out to be disposable after some years.

But, yes, the Mitutoyo clearly are the standard by which all other digital calipers are measured. Pun intended.

Where can I find genuine Mitutoyo Digital Calipers? There is a significant number of reviews on Amazon that question the authenticity of the Mitutoyo calipers they've received.

Cheapest I could find were the following,

https://www.zoro.com/mitutoyo-electronic-digital-caliper-0-to-6-in-700-113-10/i/G2295194/

https://jet.com/product/Mitutoyo-70...er-0-to-6-In/ec462701072249a99b97c30004e98e5b

Btw, there's also the occasional deals on Digital Calipers from Germany available on Amazon.com, do they get any approval here?

I got the last New-Like new for $25. Why not...I was looking at the HF calipers the other day, so why not get this one for just a little more. If it ***** I'll send it back.

I bought a fractional capable caliper about 10-15 years ago and took it into work to show our machine shop manager. I set it to fraction mode before asking him to look at it because something seemed wrong. The look on his face was priceless as a fraction came up on the display. Sadly as is often the case with cheap Chicom tools it died after about 6 months. I did utilize the fraction scale more often than I thought I would.

I like my Mitutoyo Digital Caliper but I have knocked it off the table so many times that buying another expensive caliper doesn't seem appealing.

For what it's worth, I have 6" and 12" iGaging Absolute Origin calipers. For the price: $40 for 6", $50 for 6" with fraction, and $73 for 12". They all have prime shipping on Amazon too. They're no Mitutoyo, but they are very reliable, accurate, and have absolute origin for a very affordable price.

They will not read accurately if they get wet with coolant. Once dry they are fine again.
