I’m looking to buy my son in law a digital tape measure as a gift.

He‘s not a professional contractor - just a fix it kind of guy.

I’ve never owned or used a digital tape.

Comments? Recommendations?

thanks.

I have the GLM42. I use it weekly measuring office walls for interior remodeling. They are a great asset, accurate and much easier than stretching out a tape measure. The GLM50 has bluetooth capability ,that I believe with a Bosch app and a smartphone/tablet allows you to layout a room and the dimensioning transfers to the app and "draws" the rooms/walls. I have not had a big reason to switch/learn the GLM50 and app but a few more complicated jobs and I just might.

I have two of the Bosch lasers. One seems to have been designed for young real estate agents as it will give square footage after two measurements. I used it to calculate the square footage of my house just for fun. But the fractions on it are tiny and nearly impossible to read.

The older one I have isn’t as fancy but actually works better as it is readable. I use it when measuring something that is too far for my wingspan as I am often working alone or when measuring between two items that needs an accurate measurement and you would need to bend the tape. Like window openings.

I got the first one as a set when Lowe’s had them on clearance and they were listed in the hot deals. The second one was a gift.

Thanks for the replies.

I’m envisioning him using this around the house - not moving walls or measuring sq ft. The unit I’m looking at may do more than he will ever use.

Anyone else have any suggestions? Brands? Thanks.

Come folks - this guy‘s birthday is next week!

He‘s going to get a neck tie if I don’t get a good recommendation. Thanks.

Are you asking about a digital (laser) measuring tool or a tape measure with a digital read-out on it. Two completely different things.

In your OP, i think you meant digital TAPE measure; then people started responding with laser measuring devices (like Bosch).

What do you want?

I would assume a digital laser for measuring? A true digital tape measure, one that has the same form factor and tape w/ digital readout rare and unproven (but do exist, roll the dice )

Laser measuring has hit the masses, all the major companies make them and have been pretty well sorted out by now. Pick your favorite color or price.

If you want a name brand that will impress, Bosch $, Leica $$, or Fluke $$$

Have an older Bosch and it's ok for indoors but has trouble outside. Used a couple of Leica's at work and was impressed with them but are expensive.
