I have a friend that bought a new house last year. During the pre sale inspection they realized the ac was shot so they split a new unit with the seller. At that time they put a new thermostat in. Their thermostat was in the hallway right beside the closet that holds their furnace. The door for their garage is also in that hallway about 6 feet away. They swapped out that thermostat for one that connects to their wifi so they can adjust the temp from their phones.

Fast forward to about 3 weeks ago, it started to get hot enough to need ac and the interior temp on the thermostat would never go under 74 or so while the ac is set on 72. 2 other thermometers in the house confirmed it was colder than 74. The ac guys came out and said it was cause of the warm air coming from their garage and they needed to move their thermostat. This sounded like bs to me because their garage is also climate controlled. The ac guys moved their thermostat into another room.

As of Monday this week the thermostat was still reading too high for the unit to shut off. Ac company came back out and put another thermostat in. New one is also reading too high for the ac to turn off. So far they've also tried running fans in the room the thermostat is located to keep air moving and they've pulled the thermostat off the wall and plugged the hole from the wires to ensure no warm are are is coming in from the attic into the thermostat.

I'm at a loss here. I can't think of any other reasons 2 different thermostats would read higher than other thermometers in the house. Any ideas? Thanks

Other thermometers in the house mean nothing. What does a thermometer right next to the thermostat read?

Sorry if that wasnt clear. They brought the other thermometers into the same room as the thermostat. They consistently reada few degrees cooler than the air temp on the thermostat. A thermometer hanging in the wall next to the thermostat was reading 70 last night when the thermostat read 75/76 and was set on 74
