You should have ordered a pipe size set, that was the whole point of asking Claude to do the pipe sizes so they would work with the pipe size punch dies in the HF hydraulic set. He is going to make the pipe dimple dies threaded to work with the HF mandrels.

I certainly wasn't trying to be judgmental, I just didn't see the logic in buying the HF unit. Sorry if I offended you

Got my set on Friday. Arrived safe and sound. Looks great and can't wait to try them out. Just got more gas for the tig welder and need to make a couple of dust pans so I figure I will try and make some lighting holes on them somewhere and I will post up the pictures.
Just curious, I need to box my frame for my model A and want to put flared lighting holes with either the 1.25" or 1.5" die and was wondering if I could use a hardened top flare since they take the most abuse and then the bottom die that I just got? That way I only have to by an expensive top die. If that is possible, what would a top die in 1-1/4 using heat treatable metal cost?

I've had questionable days myself. I think you'll like the HF set, I was really impressed with the quality for the $.

Not sure a dust pan is the best application, the holes sort of defeat the purpose :)

Nice to hear you got your set without a hassle. Thank you for getting one!
I like your idea of only a hardened top. It is the one getting all the abuse. The material cost would be halved.I have pricing in for several diff. alloys that you can temper easily at home. Just need a little free time to figure it out.
Also the dies are gaped for thin materials now.I have a 1/4'' rad on the top die and a .315'' rad on the bottom one. Even with hardened tooling you will struggle to get a nice result ,If you dimple 1/8 material. We would need to match the gaping with the mat. thickness.

I got as far as I posted on post nu.235.........I already have the first of three steps done on four of the sizes also.
I am still neck deep in other projects until next week some time.(income$$)

I hope there will still be interest in these dies from members when they are finished so they don't stay in my shop forever........

Thank's Jim. I was quite happy with the outcome of those parts.

Some testing I did with some 4340.
I need to adjust the feeds n speeds a little.
This one sent the machine into alarm!

imgp6687q.jpg

F#$&!

imgp6688w.jpg

Need a little more time to play around with that.......

Anyway, I have put the Pipe sizes up for sale and am extending the special $15.00 discount for a while on both sizes.
They will be ready to ship around the 1st of April. This is no joke!

So far, out of about 40 guys who wanted the regular sizes, a proud 6 members stepped up to there commitment and got a set....Thank you guys!

I will finish the 10 sets of pipe sizes I already started before making oodles of them.Un less there is commitment for more from members.

Yes I am a bit disappointed with the guys, the ratio is interesting, but I see it as long term thing. When people see what projects members will post of there projects, there will be interest in other members hopefully. Plus I will be peddling them locally when I get a break in work load.
I'm glad you like them.

Thank's Jim,
I sourced some from Green Lee as well over here . Just haven't Had the time to check them out yet.
I am staying busy yes. This is my first weekend off in 5 weeks or so......

Sir, any news on the shipping for the Pipe set yet?
Rgrds

Hi Sarel,
I had planned to be ready for shipping for the 1st week of April, but have fallen behind because of many last minute projects from my main customer.
Sorry, but they are my bread n butter and I just can't ever say no to them.
Unless they dump on me any more, I should get back to the Dies later this week.
My youngest Son broke his ankle on Thursday as well. He now has a cast from his Toes to his *** for the next three weeks....

Thank you for your patience guys.

Claude

Messing around in the garage making a new welding cart and figured I had the dies, I might as well use them! This is the bottom tray for the cart.
Punched a bunch of holes and used the 1" and the 1 1/2" dies. Turned out good. If you look closely and wonder why the bottom flange is not so deep or thick it's because I found my new dislike in one of my tools. Bi-Metal hole saws!!! Hate is such a stong word but these things are one step away from being hated and never allowed in the shop again!
So I had two carbide tipped moster hole cutters for making holes in metal bumpers for the back up sensors you see on trucks, vans and suv's. They were not the proper sized 1" and 1 1/2" but they were close and since I drilled all of the holes in less time than it took to chuck it in the drill, That's why the back side is not so deep. Kinda worked out good in my opinion.

I have decided I need to find more of those hole cutters to keep my sanity. The company that makes the back up sensors had the bits made for them and so there is no manufactor or size on them so they could not be copied. Makes it hard for me to find more in the different sizes. Anyone have an suggestions?

And I plan to get the pipe size dies once I get the knockout set. But don't you still have to drill a decent size hole for the bolt to go thru?
Regardless, you still need a set of hole cutters for a tubing notcher or when you need an actual size hole that the knockout set just can't do like 1/2" or 3/4". In that case, I would like a good carbide tip cutter.

Hole saws are great. But you need to be able to setup on a drill press and clamp your work to get the best results. Proper rpm is also quite important.
I cheat and use my 50ton iron worker for anything smaller than 1.5''. It came with all kinds of hole punches.
I really want a hydraulic hole punch kit for those hard to get at places.

The good people from Creaform were here to scan a project I've been working on. My shop was like star wars for a day.
They use a hand held laser to digitize objects. It's pretty far out how they more or less use the laser like a paint spray gun to scan and it get the picture appearing slowly on the screen like the mummy.
I asked if I could have a set of dies scanned for fun.
This is a screen shot I took from Solid Works of the STL.

You do need a 3/4" hole for the larger sizes of the HF punches. I use a 1/4" drill to locate the center then use a step drill to to take it out to 3/4"

We have a similar machine here at work that we used to reverse engineer a casting for a large gearbox housing. It works by plotting a zillion points on the surface and creating a "point cloud" that defines the part in the computer. Amazing to watch and it really ***** up a lot of computer resources.
