Hey guys, just got my test Dimples back from the platers.
So wadaya all think? On the left Yellow zinc, in the middle, Nickel ( but forget it at $15.00 bucks each!!) and Clear zinc on the right.
Please give me some feedback on your preferences before I send them all out to get plated.

Hello Ken,
I won't hold it against you if it's ok with you that I'm in Quebec.
I finally got my 3/4'' tap with a smaller shank to fit my tapping head in the CnC lathe this afternoon......
Hopefully will tap all the Dimple Dies that need tapping this week and send them all out for plating shortly after that.
Should be ready for shipping in the week of the 24th or so.
Sorry for the delay.

Thanks for the reply Claude.

I would like to place my name on the list of customers, I can only guess you are making a few extra sets for new asking customers like myself?

I will go with what ever colour of plating the majority wants to help keep things simple.

Any plans for other products?

Do you have a web page?

Cheers,
Ken

Hey Ken,
I won't be making more untill I move the remaining ones in stock.
I have to re-program every one, all over as I lost them in a thunder storm...
They will be plated with yellow zinc.
Yes I have plans for more products, when I have the time.( I am a sub-contractor for CAE and they keep me busy as heck)
I used to have my own web site but closed it after I couldn't keep up with erasing the over 200 enlarge your ***** e-mails I was getting daily.....now I have a friend who hosts my products on his web site. He can deal with all the spamming.:D

I saw that on a guys toolbox at the races as I was pushing a race car back
to the pits years ago and thought it was aproprate for my line of work.

This is the tool I will be using to tap all my Dimple Dies on my cnc lathe.

guess i get to be the first to post a project that these helped create.

decided to play around and mod my golf cart a little more.
this is my cart. gas. 5" lift. added head/tail lights. jakes front bumper
0013.jpg

decided the front bumper needed a little more style and a place to mount some lights. made a bar to run across the center here where some tabs will get mounted on the backside
001.jpg

got the bar mounted and painted. decided i now needed a skid plate on it to cover the section under the new bar. that led to my using the knock out kit and dimples to add some flare to the plate. rolled the edges just slightly around the tube
0012.jpg

got the skid plate finished and mounted and some led aux lights mounted up

The smaller mandrel is 7/16"-20. There is a manual punch set http://www.harborfreight.com/knockout-punch-kit-91201.html that has 4 punches from 1/2" to 1 1/4" (pipe sizes) and it has both the 7/16" and 3/4" mandrels as well.

The hydraulic set has 3/4" to 2" (pipe) sizes and also uses the 7/16 mandrel for the smaller sizes. http://www.harborfreight.com/hydraulic-punch-driver-kit-96718.html

FYI - there is also a 3" (pipe) punch available from them http://www.harborfreight.com/3-inch-knockout-punch-and-die-set-96796.html.

Thanks again

Jim

Seems the HF 3" is MIA online. Regardless this is the way to go.

Hyd punch is on sale now for $79.99. 20% off coupon here:

http://images.harborfreight.com/hftweb/campaigns/localmedia/general_october2012/images/22.jpg

I'll order up a set from Claude tomorrow after I visit HF to see if the 3" is in the store but not online.

How are the HF punches holding up?

Beautiful work Claude...Jewelery!

Dropped by HF today. First off.. they need to get the hyd punches out of the bottle jack and trailer section... just because it's hydraulic, was the last place I looked of course, metal working area the first. Whodathunkit?

Asked about the 3" punches by PN, said they were discontinued since 1997 but had a couple on the back shelf.. .uh huh, sure. I told him to bring me both, he brought zero.

Took a look at the hyd punch, seems solid enough. I'll run back by there in a few days and grab that and some other stuff I need/want.

Claude, I'll be ordering your HF/pipe set in the next day or so.

The sales guy is smoking funny cigarettes. I bought my 3" last year and another one for Claude earlier this year.

I just can't wait to play with the HF punch kit you sent me! I left the box out and it just kills me every time I walk by it.

I can say the same thing about my dies. I'll be making a radiator upper support this weekend (hopefully) and I'll use it then. I'll post some pictures.

There's no telling, however, the PN doesn't show up on the website anywhere, his computer says they are discontinued and any stock that is out there is leftover. So who knows.

What can we buy as a substitute that will work Claude's pipe dies? There's always a chance that HF could simply quit selling them ya know.

These:

http://http://www.toolshopdirect.co.uk/shop.php?tools=Q.Max

As it happens, this also appears to be the cheapest place on the face of the planet to buy them too (no affiliation, just a happy customer), and Adrian is a very helpful chap.

Added bonus, these are the made in the UK. (So if they are anything like english electrical components the lights will go out after rounding the first bend, or the battery will go flat after bouncing off the third pothole)

Yeah.. but what about thread sizes vs the HF punches/knockouts? I'm just thinking long term if HF discontinues and you can't get replacements.. see what I mean?

Or am I worried about a bunch of nothing?

I tried finding the hydraulic knock out kit at HF just now and could only find the small bolt knock out kit.
Maybe Jim has the competences to find them where I failed. He had given me all the the proper links a while back, but I lost all that and much more when my pc got zapped back in July....

The dies I have now all have Imp. threads in them. I did make a Metric kit for Sarel. Any more metric will have to be in the next batch cause I tapped all of them. Even the Standard sizes.
I guess we could also machine an adapter if another make of hydraulic knockout is metric.

So as to update where I'm at.
I'm putting all the info together for my web master to hand over tomorrow and every thing is boxed and ready to go.

Sorry it's taking so long, it's been busy and life catches up some times.
My Mom is sick. This adds to the juggling of priorities.

Here are the new and improved Dimple Dies. Standard and Pipe sizes.

Bunch of nothing

Just make adaptors as req'd.

Here we get the equivalent of the Harbor Freight Hydraulics with metric threaded work heads. My Qmax cutters have Imperial threads. My plan was just to make some adaptors that had a metric thread on one end and the required imperial on the other. I figure a couple of beers worth of lathe time should sort it out...Just gotta get the parts I need for the lathe and put it back together :willy_nil

Cool! Thank's American.

Claude, I hope your mothers illness is nothing major and her health returns quickly.

Thank you Adam.

Sent all my info to my web master. Should be on line next week I guess.
I'll PM everyone when it's done.

I've been highjacking this thread for to long. I need to start my own.
Where would it get the most exposure? As in category?
It would be nice for it to be focused on dimple projects.

Got my Dies Monday. Played around a little with them and gotta say the look and work great. I bought the pipe size and a HF knock out kit and they work great with each other. I have to say if you are on the fence about purchasing, do it. Great product!
The only draw back is now I get emails from the selling site in French? I spent 10 minutes trying to see if I could figure out what it said.

Thanks again NASTYZEN they work great>

Miracles do happen. I finally came to a project where I could use my dimple dies. This is the top radiator mount. It took less than 1/2 hour to drill, punch and flare all 8 holes. I'll be using them more in a couple weeks when I start on the hood structure. There is a lot of opportunity in the under bracing - I'll post some pictures.

I did have one screw up and drilled the pilot hole in the part 3/4" and the 3/4" pipe punch die uses the 7/16" thread. I made a bushing with 7/16" hole and 3/4" O.D. to be able to center the part in the punch and it worked out fine. I saved the bushing because I'm a slow learner and it will probably happen again.
