I will be installing a natural gas heater in a 22'x26' frame garage, fully insulated on Long Island. I am wondering if an Empire or Cozy style direct vent counterflow wall furnace would be effective or are the hanging gas power vent models more appropriate for a garage work shop.

I don't have experience with the Empire/Cozy style. I have a Reznor power vent gas model. As you can see in the picture, it only needs 1 inch clearance. I am 5' 9" and have tons of clearance to walk under it. My garage is 24 X 32 and fully insulated, so similar to yours and I live in NW Ohio so I have similar temps. I keep it at 50 all winter and turn it up when I want to work. Takes about 10 minutes to heat the whole place. I also did not see much difference on my gas bill after installing it. I would definitely buy another if I needed heat.

I had never heard of the direct vent furnace but it's a nice concept. I just don't like the price.

I am mounting a home central heat unit on top of my office in the garage. It's cheap, it's high enough not to worry about gas fumes, and I don't really need to duct it.
