I went to Sherwin Williams store today and I wanted the H&C concrete sealer and all the stuff to prepare the concrete... First, the woman there recommand me the Epoxy... They don't have all the other stuff, such the etching and degreaser in that brand... I'm not comfortable to mix brands for that job... I was very disapointed of my visit. The woman was not cool and she seems to unknown the products very well...

I'm planning to go to Ottawa, it's about one hour and half far, but I'm expecting that the service will be better...

Salesman at a local Sherwin Williams tried to get me to go epoxy also. Told him I wasn't interested. I told him I wanted the H&C sealer and nothing else. Got TSP for cleaning and Muratic Acid for etching at HD. Just came in from scrubbing the floor one last time. Been waiting a week to put the sealer down. It has rained every day here since I bought the sealer.

I had issues with Sherwin Williams sales people too. I was looking at the H&C sealer. Salesman tried to talk me into epoxy...didn't want it. After he figured out he couldn't change my mind he showed me the H&C. He didn't want to order me the premixed gull gray. Instead he wanted to mix it there for me. He told me if I go with the permix I could return unopened cans but mixed at the store I would be stuck with. I fugured he was trying to bone me for about $90-$100 if he sold me too much. I went with another brand from a concrete supply house. More than satisfied with the Butterfield Color Guard. Basically the same as the H&C, also Xylene based. Sherwin Williams people didn't impress me......

Benefits, Pros Cons of Xylene based?

Pros
1. Dries fast, I was able to get 3 coats on in one day.
2. Has a nice sheen, not too glossy, but nice.
3. Haven't noticed it being slick when wet.
4. Had some road tar come off my tires when I came off the oil and chip road on the backside of my subdivision. A rag with a little Ronson light fluid took it right off with no damage to the finish.
5. I got mine for $198 shipped for 5 gallons although I had to buy two additional gallons for finish. Ended up with about a 1/3 gallon left over. That was 780 sq. ft, 3 coats.
6. No pot life. As long as you don't let this stuff freeze it has a shelf life of two years, unlike epoxy that you mix and only have about 30 minutes to use before it gets hard.
7. We've had out fair share of 90+ degree days and I pulled right in to my garage with hot tires and it looks as good as the day I applied it.

Cons
1. Application. I followed the directions on using a 3/4 inch roller nap and got air bubbles. Buffed it down with my floor scrubber and rolled a small section then used a flat paint pad 9 inches wide. That seemed to pull the sealer making it heavy in some areas. Buffed it again and at my brothers advise mopped it on with a commercial type janitor mop, wringer, and bucket. Those were trashed when I was done. My floor ended up pretty nice, you can see some of the marks from different applications. It's not smooth as glass. If I had it to do over again I might try a $70 Wagner airless sprayer.

Overall I'm more than happy with the Butterfield Color Coat sealer. When it's time to reapply all I have to do is hose it off, dry it and put down more. The new sealer will "mix" with the old stuff. No more prep. The only draw back with that is say if you have a white floor and decide you want to change it to black.... it will turn gray. Blue floor to green floor you'll probably wind up with a god awfull purple color, and so on. I've posted these pictures before but I'll show it off again.....

Where did you get the Butterfield? Their transparent stuff looks like it might be just what I'm looking for on my front porch.

FWIW, I'm using H&C clear 23 to reseal the acid stained floors in my house. Home Depot was much cheaper than Sherwin Williams. It was $30/gallon at SW and $21/gallon at HD (5 gallons was $96). I believe the other H&C concrete sealer was like $102ish for 5 gallons.

Isn't it supposed to recoat after 12 hours? This is the recommanded time for H&C concrete sealer...

I don't know?? It was dry to the touch in about 15-20 minutes and I could walk on it in a hour. I applied on a nice 76 degree day with low humidity so I'm sure that had something to do with it. I did make sure I had no vehicle traffic on it for a week. Product recommed something like 72 plus hours but we were decorating for my son's graduation party so no cars were going in there anyway. The next day after the last coat I moved my tool cabinet and work benches back in. Everything had rollers or was on moving carts and it was fine...no problems. I'm so impressed with this Butterfield stuff I'd apply it at twice the cost before I'd do expoxy even if I could have the epoxy done for free. But thats my opinion, and I don't own any interest in Butterfield in case someone needs to know. The only other downside to the Butterfield is it stinks like hell for a few days after you put it down. When I was home and could do so I raised my overhead doors and ran my ceiling fans. After a few days you couldn't smell it.
