Dishwasher mounting dilemma

The countertop is chipped out above the dishwasher and, there isn't enough meat to comfortably attach the top clips on the DW to the countertop. Consequently the clips are missing from the top of the dishwasher as well. This is a rental house and I'm not going to replace the countertop as it looks fine from above and is still sturdy. I was going to glue a block of ply underneath to screw the clips into but, discovered the clips are gone. Not sure what the past renter did? Anyway, any ideas on a simple but robust fix?

You should be able to fab something on your own that will allow you to secure it from the side of the appliance to the side of the cabinet.

I made some top brackets out of angle iron that I screwed up into the under side of the counter top at my old house. Worked great and free.

What's the goal here?

I had a granite guy come in and put in a slab which they then completely shattered trying to drill the dishwasher mounting bracket into. They came back out with a 2nd slab and I told them not to bother.

What I did for that dishwasher was between the door and the seal, I screwed the dishwasher into the cabinet from the side. I'm guessing that is not going to be possible for every dishwasher but it was for mine. I figured as long as it was outside of the gasket no water was meant to be there anyway and as long as it cleared the door .. then I was good.

The other thing you might be able to do is just shim it. You're just trying to prevent it from tipping over when the door is open and the plates are out. If you can shove some wood back in there to keep it from tipping then that should solve it.

I see it as a 2 part problem. First, gain attachment clips to the dishwasher. Second, secure the clips to countertop.

I would lower the 'jacking feet' which position the dishwasher as high as the countertop allows. This should get you up to an inch of clearance to see what's up inside of there. New clips could be screwed to the metal frame, or other modifications. I'd consider trying to use a piece of aluminum angle "iron" to solve both. Its easy to shape with files, hacksaw and drill bits. It can be cut long enough to span over the bad areas under the countertop out to "fresh wood" that can take screws, and it can be 4-12 screws to beef it all up and improve strength.

How you attach the angle to the dishwasher frame is your choice. It could be something quick and simple like stainless steel hose clamps or large width tie-wraps up to something neater that you setup with round-head machine screws and nuts.

I screwed the dishwasher into the cabinet from the side..

Don't know what brand dishwasher you have, but most are designed so they can be attached on the side to the cabinets.

Replacement clips are cheap ($5-$10), and you should be able to find them at most big box home improvement stores. Google "Dishwasher mounting clip", or search specifically for "Whirlpool Tall Tub Dishwasher Side Mounting Bracket"
