Finally was able to move old bookcases up to bonus room to display my old tool chests. They've been laying around on the floor for a couple of years.

Fantastic display and good way to display them. Some up close pictures of the tool chests would be interesting to see.

How did you do that? I tried but couldn't do it...

I downloaded your pic, rotated it, saved it and then uploaded it

If you're running Windows - you should be able to rotate it yourself by using MS Paint

Ken,

Those boxes are gorgeous. I'm in the process of restoring a variety of vintage wooden tool boxes. Several Gerstner, some Union, one Federal, etc. I'd love some tips on how to do this so that I end up with something that hopefully approaches the quality of the finish that you achieved. Where do you purchase your felt and hardware? What types of glues do you use for attaching the felt, and how do you actually install it so there aren't any wrinkles? What did you use to remove the grease and grime to reveal the beauty of the wood underneath?

I've contacted Gerstner, and they've got most of the hardware I need for their boxes. Some of it is fairly expensive (the handles alone are $50) but they have just about everything I think I will need to restore their boxes. They even have the keys. But Union is a different story. And for several of the very old tool boxes I have I am unable to identify a maker, so it's difficult to figure out where to buy missing drawer pulls and other parts. And advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Since I own machinistchest.com it's easy to get parts. I use hide glue for repairs and felt. The felt is easy to smooth out when applying. For cleaning I use GoJo handcleaner (NO Pumice) and scotchbrite pads (mild). Rub with the grain, letting the GoJo dissolve the crud. Clean with paper towels. In the tradition of the original chests, I use shellac as a finish.

We supply parts for all types of chests. Check out our handles. I hand make each one and they are more robust than others.

If you have any questions during restoration, feel free to contact me.

Love the red felt on that craftsman... Really pops. Great restorations and great display!
