Last year I put together a flag pole for my Dad to fly Old Glory at the home place farm. When machining the parts, I did enough to assemble two poles thinking I would put one up here at home.

Well, it's about time to get off that pot and figure out where to place our flag pole. Since making and installing the first pole, the wife and I have come into a second property. No shop, just house, that we use as a getaway. I need to make the decision as to which place I'd like to put the thing and the best orientation.

Over the weekend, we went for a ride and saw some creative, if not reverent displays. I want to fly our Flag with respect and taste, as it deserves.

So, I'd like to see what you have done with your flag displays. Ideas welcomed.

BTW, here's the one we put at the farm.

simple L shaped frame thats attached to the railing upright.

c shape pin at the top, and a chrome coil spring at the bottom to maintain tension.

lit by a single solar powered light from below.

Thanks Chief, I like that idea of using the railing as apart of the support. It happens this house in question has very similar supports. If the pole thing doesn't work out, I can see your mount as a solution.

Just put mine in on a 30' pole in front yard similar to yours. Had a thread in free parking last week
Yours looks good

zkd, I missed your thread, but I'm glad you mentioned it here. I probably won't go into the detail you have to secure the pole. Thought at the moment is to mount on top of a pad. The first one was done that way simply because the original pole failed in high wind. Second one may not be any better, but is replaceable.

Yours turned out quite well. 30' is up in the world when viewed from the ground!

Here's a video at the farm. The wind blows like that 24/7/365 down there.

Here is mine - is commercial so was a bit spendy. There is a solar light that is mounted on the top and shines down on the Flag at night. The pole is set in a sleeve that is set in concrete so that the pole can be pulled out when you want.

I have several flags, one on the post next to our driveway entrance,
one antique flag hanging on the wall next to our staircase and the big
one below that my XLY rescued from the post office where she works,
her boss took it down from the flagpole outside and tossed it in the trash,
she about had a stroke when she saw him do it, grabbed it out and asked
him what in the world he was doing. He said it was dirty and he was going
to get a new one outa stock. They supply flags to be used on vets coffins
so they have a lot of new ones in stock.
She asked if she could have the one he tossed in the trash, he said sure.
She brought it home and I washed it to get the stains out of it and then
hung it from our balcony. I like it, I think it looks great up there.

The one that ended up in the trash needs to be burned. Take it to the local vfw or boy scouts, they do a proper ceremony with flag disposal.

This is a real problem because the flags I use are synthetic material and are toxic when burned. They would also never deteriorate if buried. The syn flags last 10x longer in the west Texas wind and weather than a cloth version. After that - what. I think the next one I'm going to just cut longways into strips and shred. Probably not supposed to cut one, but don't have access to a shredder that can handle a whole flag.

the last thing i wanted was to have to dig a bigass hole and fill it with concrete for a base.

anything thats in the yard is an obstacle to be mowed around. :spit:

as an added bonus, it didnt cost anything, everything was laying around in the garage that i needed :rocker:

Currently, I don't have a flag up. This bothers me. But getting a USA made flag, quality pole w/bearings, setting up a light so it can stay out at night etc. takes some money and research that I have just not committed to.

On the 4th, I put up the big boy that I bought from a member on here years ago.

When my barn was nice and new, I had a flag out front. The flag kept getting wrapped around the pole, which was flimsy and foreign. It bent. Replaced it with copper pipe, which bent. Now no flag! But it's on my list.

I helped a boy get his Eagle by retiring over 300 flags that were left at the VFW. One of them was a "battalion" flag. IIRC it was 25 X 40 feet (?). Much to large to place on any individual fire. According to the rules that he found we laid it out on the floor and disassembled it (cut the stripes out and cut the field so each piece held a star). He labeled each star with the name of a state and had a VFW member from that state retire the star. We had three burn barrels going with diesel to start with and had the boys use 4 foot pieces of rebar to put the flags in the barrels. The fire department was there and they were content with the process.

There are several good web sites with information about retiring a flag. The common theme is that the flag is burned completely and with respect and dignity.

Put mine up last yr. Dug a 2' deep hole x I think 3' round. Then stacked the retaining wall blocks 3 deep. Filled all that with Redi-Mix concrete. This pole is a telescoping one that sits in a sleeve that is concreted in also. Makes for changing flags simple and no nagging "ting ting ting" of the clasps and ropes on the pole.

I have seen winds exceed 40mph with 2 flags on it without any problems. Surprised me:thumbup:

One nice thing about the sleeve is you could bury it flush with the ground and when time to mow the lawn just lift the pole out, mow over, re-install pole. No real permanent obstacle in your way if you wanted.

These are some great examples. I really like the landscaped/built in designs as something like that may fit into our current yard plan. Setting the pole in sand is another great idea worth consideration.

I'm still researching options and the scheme that has the most appeal might be one that incorporates a removable pole should it become damaged, or another location be more desirable.

We're doing a bit of landscaping (clean-up) and at the moment, I'm not certain how far we'll go with that and what areas of the yard will open up or expand.

Thanks for the suggestions and examples!

When displaying the flag, please observe proper flag etiquette

http://www.usflag.org/flagetiquette.html

Cheers
Steve

Etiquette shmetiquette.......I don't have a light on my Flag, and I am not taking it down every night. Flame me if you must, but I look up and down the road, and there is me and two others who fly the Flag, and it is flown the same way. Our Flags fly proud 365/24/7, rain, sleet, snow or hail. When it gets tattered and torn, it comes down and a brand new Flag goes up. I don't throw the old one ion the trash, but I burn it myself in the privacy of my property with no onlookers.

When the Flags throughout the last couple of centuries were flown or carried in war, they never worried about the blood that got splattered on them for the freedom of others. They never worried that the Flag got rained on, nor if the Flag was still flying after the gunfire stopped and the sun went down. All that mattered was the Flag was flying to designate our freedom.

I don't have ceremonies for my Flag, but I will fly my Flag proudly 365/24/7 in all sorts of weather as long as I live. And if my flagpole goes down today, there will still be a Flag up somewhere tomorrow!!! :rocker:

Picked up a 20' aluminum pole a few years ago. Have it in the front yard. Trees have grown up around it so you can't hardly see the flag.

Would like to fly this flag from time to time, to honor my great grandfather.

But don't dare, here in Detroit.

Our flag pole is simple sectioned aluminum pole. Its also set in a plastic sleeve embedded in small concrete filled hole.

Nice as Ive had to remove the pole more than a few times, broke pulley etc but ususllay it gets tangle up to point cant lower.
attachment.php

Pole had an eagle on top that would shred the flag after a while. I like it but finally removed.
attachment.php

I dug up the lawn that was here previously. Lined area with some old rocks and filled with gravel.

Added the small pieces of flag stone later.

Enjoy seeing it from the shop window.

As to etiquette, yes there are guidelines but as long as whatever is done with respect and appreciation its ok in my book.
