Disregard-Taking apart Wilton Vise question

(Disregard this post, I disassembled, cleaned, and just put the vise back together with more lubricant but noticed the female threads were not smooth inside of the nut so I will return it and probably get an older used vise)

Hi GJ,

I bought a new Wilton vise last week and I might return in it. The handle does not twist easily when tightening and loosening. I did lubricate it. I looked inside and there are a bunch of metal shavings and dirt. I read an Amazon review about having to clean it to function properly.

I removed 1 pin and another partially but am not sure how to take this apart further. My goal is to clean the inside and regrease.

What’s the next thing I should do to take it apart? Thank you!

That looks like a nice little vise. Sounds messed up they ship it out with shavings. That rough edge though, maybe an exchange would help.
Yes, I may exchange it.
Most of the other small clamp on vises are made in China. So, I picked out this Wilton since it was not made in China. My plan is use it in the backyard as a portable vise, so I picked a tiny 2.5 inch vise. I have a 6 inch vise clamped to my workbench in the garage.

Just bumping the thread before mailing the vise back to exchange it with the same one.

i'm not familiar with your particular model of wilton, but if I opted to buy a new vise and it didn't work I'd probably return it and either hope the next one was better or buy an old used vise. another option to using a vise on a saw horse or even a 2x4 is a Zyless aluminum vise. they sold new at the home shows for about $250, but i've seen many in the $50 to $100 range that are like new. I own more than a few vises and I still use my Zyliss occassionally cause it's so versitile.

the Wilton bullet style vises are maybe the best marketed vises on the market because Wilton sold all the parts to repair them. that said I've owned more than a few and if there isn't a real reason to take the vise nut out I never do cause the single and double pins Wilton used could be a pain to remove. you might take a few more pictures of your Wilton and post them on the Vise Repair 101 thread with your questions and maybe one of the other vise guys will have an answer for you.

The cap just popped up and I was able to remove the nut. I’m going to pause on it for this weekend. Thanks for the info!

Update: I just put the vise back together after cleaning and adding lubricant. It improved now but spinning the handle the handle is 360 is smoot until 270 then rough the last 90 then gets smooth again. I noticed the female threads inside the nut were not smooth and could use a rethreader to clean it out. So, I will return it and get it a used small clamp on vise for use in the backyard on a sawhorse.

Hi Drivesit far, do you know the biggest board that the zyless vise can clamp onto? Can the Zyless clamp onto a 3.5 inch tall board (for example, clamping it to a sawhorse or can it clamp on the 1.5 inch side)? That is a neat vise. I wonder why they do not make it anymore.

I can’t recall the max width my zyliss vise could clamp on to but it’s a handy vise. I don’t know the status of many new vise makers cause I use and collect vises usually made prior to 1960 and love the pre ww2 versions. Keep an eye on Craigslist, offerup, and Facebook marketplace for a zyliss cause I’m sure some of the old guys in your area bought one when I did about 40 years ago.

Or just exchange that Wilton for one that doesn’t have any issues.

I returned the Wilton. Thank you for the recommendation on the Zyliss vise and I like it!
