The new boxes are powder coated but you need to touch them up with paint unless you want to strip the entire box and powder coat it again.

For those of you that wondered why Snap-on red cost more on boxes, take a look at the powder coat code. They use an abrasion resistant resin based powder coat that is different from the other colors.

That, and along with the fact most red paints cost more anyway due to the pigments required for the color.

Snap-on red is the traditional red color of their boxes. Candy Apple Red is a "candy" style of translucent paint that is a deeper red color without the orange tint of Snap-on red.

You can get Candy Apple Red on some boxes but Snap-on Red is available on ALL of their boxes

So does anybody have a cross reference for these Ditzler paint codes?I called like 5 automotive paint suppliers today and nobody can cross them over to anything in their paint libraries. These were all different dealers including PPG and Dupont.Nobody could do anything with the Ditzler numbers.

I am having the same problem. My Sher-Will Auto Paint guy thought he had figured it out, but what I actually got was a Burgundy! I just sprayed seven drawers, and they are absoluely NOT Snap-On red.

I had always assumed that Ditzler was the defacto standard - kinda like Pantone (PMS), but... I guess not.

Can anyone help me get the Sherwin-Williams code for Snap-On red (PPG 73504)...

Good luck,I emailed PPG three weeks ago and haven't received a response yet.PPG makes Ditzler.Best response I've had from any paint supplier so far was to bring in a drawer and they would computer color match it.

No one ever answered this. I think SO changed their red at some point. Anyone know?

I suspect they did, when they added the "PBO" suffix onto end of the classic Snap-On red part numbers. Standard red didn't used to have a suffix.

I'm not sure 100%, but if they did change it, I would like to know what change they made.

The older catalogs called the Snap-On red "E-Coat" which was different than the standard colors. I think the Snap-On red might have been powercoat for a long time but the other colors used to be standard wet paint, that is what I always assumed.

Far as I can tell there's nowhere to buy Ditzler paint in Canada.I think it's a myth like a unicorn.I've had two toolboxes sitting waiting for paint for almost a month now.F*ck PPG! I'll be taking a drawer to my dupont guy and matching something from the book. This is retarded.PPG can't even be bothered to answer an email.

How close is this to fire engine red which is a factory pak color? Just as a note the Imron JD green is perfect, even better than the crappy enamel JD sells which you never know exactly what color that might turn out to be,, ha. I like the factory pak, can always match it later.

I'm trying to get the green mica.If my box was red it wouldn't be an issue.I could just leave the two new top chests I bought in their factory red and called it done but sitting two red boxes on top of the green one is going to drive me nuts.

Digging a little further, it appears that Ditzler has tagged this paint code "proprietary".

Well you can buy the little spray can from Snap on for what it would cost to get a couple quarts somewhere else. They used to list paint by the quart but now it's just a touch up bottle or a spray bomb.

No sense in paying Snap on triple what a spray can is worth,I'll just take a drawer in to the paint supplier. At least then I know I'll be close to my own box.I spray can is a shot in the dark, you can't gaurantee a match since it was mixed in a different batch from my own paint.

Those little cans wouldn't help with a restore. But I would like to paint a freebie (not Snap on), that bright green, and I don't have a drawer with that color.

There's something incredibly hot about that "Extreme Green" color...

I'd love to find a deal on a 56" or 72" Extreme Green box...

I called several places and no one could use the Ditzler number. To match it...they still wanted at least $30 for one spray can. I found a place that could would charge $30 for the paint and then $12 per can.

I called snap on and they charged less than $25 per 12 oz can. So for touch up paint... it will help make scratches disappear and look like new again. I tried el cheapo and use something that could be close from lowes spray paint, but it was a shade or two darker. Using factory paint is my best bet.

I don't have a spray gun and rather use a rattle can. This works for me and Snap on customer service so far have been superb.

I hope this helps anyone considering touch up paint for their Snap on box.

i recently bought a very used KR555D box (36 wide, 8 or 9 drawers i cant remember) i took it all apart to clean n lube slides and i sanded some worn paint and im using the box as the base in a workbench so im going to shoot all the drawer fronts and front of box. anyways...

IS THE SNAP ON TOUCH UP PAINT MORE DURABLE THEN RUSTOLOEUM?

if im painting the ENTIRE front of the box so its looks good/fresh im not so worried on matching as i am durability so is the Snap On paint any different the regular spraypaint?

If it is any more durable (which I don't think it is) it is FOR SURE not $20 a can more durable... but then again, if you are just painting the front of the drawers you can do it with one can so it might be worth it to you to pay the extra so it will be the right color.
