Has anyone here ever built a gas engine driven arc welder out out a car alternator? I see a lot of info on the web about how to do this, but I am trying to get some 1st hand info from someone here who has done it. I need a winter project and this might be just the ticket.

I see a lot of potential, but also some disadvantages. Then again, for $20, even if you're maxing at 50 amps, it isn't bad at all.

Do you need the portabilty of a gas driven welder? If not, buy a used tombstone for $50 and built something with it.

Yes portability is key. I have a couple of wire feed welders, but often times I need to do some work outdoors and there never is a 50A oultet around when you need it!
