I really like how these old rim diy stands turned out and prob will make a few more in the future. I had the tubes from a old weight bench I got long long ago but might try fence post next. Prob need to replace my HF grinder eventually but long as it keeps on spinning I'll find a use for it.

I made one years ago from a wheel and pipe fittings. I filled the rim with concrete to make it more stable. Now days, big pipe and flanges would probably cost you more than an HF ready-made stand.

+1
Those cheap HF stands are actually pretty good with a bit of extra weight. I piled a thick chain (about 25 lbs) at the base and it worked well.

Mine was made specifically to hold scrap steel, to give it some weight.

Your prob right bout the pipe n stuff

The thing I like bout a pipe/pole stand is you can make the height custom and when yah know your gonna be standing there for an hour or more then that is a perk to me. The HF one is a good deal and light enough to move around easy .

My old stand was heavy(more top than I liked) and I move my stuff around in that small workshop all the time, so I prefer a lighter stand. I thought about welding a bolt inside the rim and putting some old rusty plate weights inside but I think the wide round base and steel wheel are good enough. Still even if it was heavy at least it's be easier to move around than my old square base stand because it can be rolled just like my bus brake drum vise stand.

Thanks for the comments and sharing your stands & info!

Anything you would change with your adjustable tables? Been considering replacing the **** stamped sheet ones on my grinder and really like your design.

Heres mine....Made them out of 4” sq .250 wall tubing. Used a combo of 1/4 & 3/8 plate for the top and bottom plates as well as the gussets. I added jack screws to all 4 corners to even them out anyplace I put them. No vibration here. I cold probably set the house on each one, but rest assured, they don't move. I took the height and basic measurements from a old Baldor stand I have at work, I like the height. I been using these the last 20 years...

I bolted a number of my grinders to a lengths of angle iron. I grab whichever I need off the shelf and clamp it in a vise via the angle iron. One of my vises has elevation adjustment so works out slick... not always 'bent over' the grinder. saves a lot of space.

I had a neighbor getting rid of a straight six drive shaft with the fly wheel still connected. Really happy with it! I recently changed out that grinder for an older 1/2 Craftsman block grinder.

I got a small vise & small grinder with brass/nylon wheels, bolted to pieces of wood that I clamp to the bench in my small workshop when I need to use em.
