Hello all,

I'm looking for some DIY book recommendations on wiring projects and such. Maybe you found one that is more helpful than others.

I have a small 20x20 attached garage that only has what the builder installed; a receptacle for the opener and another next to the light switch. The power strips and extension cords just don't get it anymore. It's untidy and marginally unsafe.

During another house project, I had the electrician install a 100amp subpanel in the garage, knowing that one day I would add outlets and lights to the garage. Well, that time has finally arrived.

I want to add at least four receptacles to each wall, more lighting and receptacles to the ceiling as well in case I want to add a cord reel or drop light.

The garage is already drywalled so my plan is to use conduit and surface mount everything.

Most of what I do is light maintenance and repair. My compressor is a small pancake but plan to upgrade one day. I also will add a drill press, bench grinder, and perhaps t some point a small welder set-up. In other words, take care of my current needs, but build in enough reserve to handle any future additions.

If I get a welder or a good sized compressor, I'll want a couple of 240v circuits as well. My requirements are pretty simple, I think. It's just me or my son and me at any one time. It's not like a production shop where one may have a number of tools running at the same time.

I need information on planning circuits, 15 or 20 amp? What gauge wire? How many wires can I pull through what diameter conduit? Pretty basic stuff. I would like to do the work myself but leave the final hook up to the panel to the electrician.

So, are the books you might find at Lowe's, HD or Amazon pretty much the same or have you found one that you thought was better written, or illustrated or oriented to what I want to do?

Thanks for any insight and suggestions you may have.

Jim
