I need to install a cat door in my garage. The building is sided. Any ideas on how to make a nice working and sealing door and still look good. I know I could buy one but looks like most are plastic and not very good quality.Should I build a little pen on the inside and maybe a light or something for a little heat. There is coyotes and fox is the area that might bothere yje cat in the winter

Re: Diy cat door

Just buy one. Spend a bit more and get the magnetic or electric safety door to keep out unwanted pest. You can always trim out the door to make it look nicer.

This. I got a magnetic one which was a little pricey in my opinion(prob $50) but it has all aluminium coated trim, is magnetically closed and has an extra flap.It fits many install depths and the install looks decent.

We are cat people here, so I've installed a few cat doors.

I found buying a cat door on eBay is about half of the local price. And on an outside wall, I put one door on the inside and outside of the wall.

I always have two dogs and never had a problem with the ones with a magnet at the bottom.

I've seen people put them in a door instead of cutting a hole in the side of the building.

Mine is a sliding door insert, no modification at all.

i got a replacement rubber flap for a cat door for...i don't know, cheap.

Knocked a hole through the cinder block wall. 1/4 plywood "insert" walls. Trimmed the outside. nailed the flap to a block, and nailed the block to the "insert wall" ceiling..

If that makes sends. Probably cost me $50 total. wood, trim, flap, foam sealer, paint, trips to the store. I don't recommend it, but it sure is pretty.

Do not be afraid to get the smallest one you can.
Cats can get through some pretty small holes,
and it may help keep out your dogs, etc.

Be prepared for visiting cats, too!

I won't get into the 'through the door' cat fight one night. When done, we needed a new cat door.

Forget the pen inside. If the cat goes in the cat door and something is chasing it, the cat needs to be able to get away from whatever is chasing it and not be trapped in a pen.

Thanks for the comments. The cat is very small so a little door is good. She is a little stray that started hanging out with us. I don't want an indoor cat, already have a golden retreiver but trying to make her comfortable as possible outside

Its a Trap I had one .

Mom -now its NINE , an I gave 4 kittens away an had the 1st litter fixed. I left the door open with a 2x6 blocker an last night I had a baby skunk in there . Placed food trail out the door , went to run around the house to the side door an found Mom or Dad on other side of house . Cats are All outside now.

Funny to see all the cat people on here. Next year maybe I'll start offering cat spays/neuters in exchange for tools.
