DIY Duct Cleaner

Hi everyone! I recently had an estimate on having our flexible ductwork cleaned. Like most services, these days all the estimates seem too expensive.

The next day I noticed this special tool my wife has in her cleaning arsenal. It’s a dust head she uses for cleaning dust bunnies from up around the ceiling. It looked like a perfect fit for scrubbing the side walls, so I contemplated how to run it through flexible duct.

I was reluctant to use my drain auger to feed it through as I thought it might catch the delicate inner linings.

So I went out to the garage and found a roll of half-inch clear polyethylene pipe. Like so much stuff stored in my garage, where it came from I have no idea, but I am glad I didn’t throw it out during one of my manic cleaning events.

With a little duct tape engineering, I managed to make a duct cleaner that is rigid and smooth enough to keep from damaging the inner lining of the duct.

I ran my new tool through the run several times, then blew it out with a large shop vac. I couldn’t believe how much dirt blew out. I have a PVC fabric-lined crawlspace so I could easily see the amount of discharge.

My wife says she notices the difference when she sweeps the floors, and that’s all I needed to hear.
