Has anyone used a DIY foam insulation kit like the following:

http://www.tigerfoam.com/

It seems expensive, so I was thinking some combination of insulation. Will be doing a post frame garage. So, possibly thinking like a pink board against the girts/OSB, then an inch or two of the spray foam, and then possibly like an r-19 or similar rolled insulation.

I like the foam as it seems like it is better than anything at sealing and making things air tight.

I could do 2x4 or 2x6 studs, 2x4 might work if I do the board then spray foam, then maybe an R-13?

Just looking for ideas.

Used the exact stuff - Tigerfoam.
I ordered two kits and it was like $1200. You should order an extra few nozzles, as if you take a break the nozzle will plug up. I ordered the tyvek suit as well, which turned out to be a waste.

I sprayed about almost the entire inside of my pole barn, I didn't go really thick as the walls are 2x6,, but it definately stiffened up things and sealed all the seams. I then framed from the inside and used R19 batts. Seems to keep it cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

How big is your place? Did you do the ceiling/roof?

So you just went right up against the sheathing/metal with it on the walls?

My barn is about 45x90 - 10 foot ceilings.

Prior to me framing out the inside with 2x6s, it was 2x4s running parallel to the floor, every four foot or whatever - that the outside sheeting was screwed to.

I sprayed the insullation directly on the inside of the metal sheeting. I then came back and framed out between the poles (poles were every 8 ft). I then insullated the framed 2x6 walls with R19. Put sheeting on that, pained and I was done with the walls.

The ceiling, I hung 3x20 foot metal panels,, and laid R30 direclty on the metal.

So far so good. I am really happy with it. The really hot days this year (100+) that barn never got over 80 degrees, even on the really hot days.

How did you do that whole barn for $1200? I'm coming up with roughly 2700 sq ft and the $600 kits estimate about 600 sq ft at 1" thick. Tough to spray much thinner isn't it?
Please elaborate on which product you used and how you applied. I've been considering same process as I really like how foam seals it all up.
Thx

I didn't spend $600 insulating my entire shop with R13 batts. I'd have a hard time shelling out for that kind of money on a garage.

I looked at this hard last year and decided to have the pro's do it. For a 25x40 @ 8 feet tall garage and crawlspace which was 30x50 and three feet tall they charged me 1400 dollars. 2 inches of closed cell was sprayed in the crawlspace and the 3.5 to 4 inches of open cell foam was sprayed in the garage. 1400 dollars out the door. I couldn't buy the materials for that price and plus the labor involved.

My F-I-L has been spraying foam roof tops for like over 30 years, add a couple of houses, and even a tanker truck trailer. That one was used to ship cold cuts from a slaughter house, to a dog food plant. Spraying it on a flat roof, like a school, was hard work. He even suffered his heart attack, after spraying the inside of a house. It's a cool product, but the materials and equipment costs warrant the price, if you want it done professionally. It still turns my stomach to smell it coming out of the gun. Brings back bad memories of hard labor, and praying for a rainy day so that we would stop working... :)

PeterT, you have any pictures of your barn? I also thought about doing the seams and joints with the small spray foam kit, to seal out the cold, along with spiders and snakes.

See below for foam picture...I don't have any pictures of the foam, but what I did was spray the lower maybe 5 foot of the wall. I know I should have just sprayed the entire walls, but the foam was expensive.
I figure this sealed up the lower portion good, keeps bugs out. It also gave the base a good ridgid feel from the outside.

I then framed out the inside, hung R19, then put OSB on that. By the way HD & Lowes had the insullation by the roll about $10.

Have you priced this out in your area for someone to come out and do the job? I'm in Mid MI (about 30miles out of Lansing) as well and know of a guy that does good work for a fair price. PM me if you want the contact info, as I know he is willing to travel around.

I'd love that, I got two quotes from guys really close to me and the cheapest one was about 2.50 a sq and the other one was about 3.00 a sq for 2".

2.50/sq
Is that $2.50 for 1 square foot, or $2.50 per square which is 100 square feet??
Big difference.

Spray foam is neat stuff, but from everything I've seen it's just WAY expensive, more than it's worth IMO.

When I first started looking into doing foam insulation, several years ago, it was cheaper to have a pro do the job rather than DIY. When it came time to actually do the job this year, the pro's had increased their price and the hardware store my wife works at started selling DOW DIY kits and I can get them at a discount. It is now cheaper for me to do DIY, and more convenient as I can just do the area's I am interested in as I go thru my renovation. Where the pro wanted to do everything at once, or charge me multiple setup fee's. I had some issues and learned the hard way what to do and not do. For proper coverage, mixing and cure, the bottle temperatures must be where the vendor says they should be, while spraying. I had an enclosed box that I put both bottles in with a small heater to maintain the temperature. I also found out, at least with the DOW foam, that after spraying a layer down, one should not spray over that layer for at least 20 minutes. Otherwise too much heat is generated in that first layer and issues will arise. This tid bit of info is not in any of the information that is distributed with the product, it is buried deep in the DOW website. The other issue I had was getting the nozzles properly seated on the gun. There were two 'clicks' to get the nozzle properly in place, and the first few nozzle changes I only got the first 'click'. It took a good deal of force to get the second click, much more than I was expecting.

Any pics of you garage sprayed with the Dow foam
Sorry, no pics of the foam. Presently I am renovating my house, one wall at a time. Seems there is no sheathing or vapor barrier on the outside of the house, just a fiberboard (1/2"thick cardboard) that the clapboards were nailed to. Needless to say the clapboards are coming loose. I am removing the clapboard, the fiberboard and the fiberglass insulation and putting in the spray foam, plywood sheathing, vapor barrier and then cement siding. I have only completed 2 sides of the house so far and it is already noticeably tighter, less squeaky when the wind blows and generally warmer. When the house is done, then I will spray the garage.

ixlr8, sounds like quite a project. Now this I would like pictures of, or more detail. Are you spaying the foam against the inside drywall? Any issue with moisture barrier etc?

I always see people make comments on prices of insulation and its always such a low cost. I havent seen a roll of insulation regardless of brand or type for $10 a roll ever. At least not in the past 20 years.

Insulation is super freakin expensive.

I should have said faced insulation since that was what i meant, my bad. His pic shows faced r-19 not unfaced r-19 so i figured he meant $10 a roll for faced r-19. If you can find faced insulation r-19 for $10 a roll please tell me where i can get it.

That price in your menards link is also a sale price, its normaly $15.35 a roll plus tax.

You can get r-11 faced a roll for about $10 (15" wide) a roll but not r-19 faced (15" wide) from what i have seen from menards, lowes or HD.
