DIY fume extractor?

Anyone ever rig up their own fume extractor for welding/soldering? I was thinking a 3-6in diameter hose hooked up to an inline fan venting outside would be pretty effective.

When I build the attic in the garage I went over kill on the exhaust fan so I could shoot fumes into the attic and have the 24in exhaust fan **** them out.

Kind of an inexpensive version of what these guys make.

I was thinking shoot the fumes into the garage attic with a large flexible hose leading to the ceiling and have the 24in huge *** fan up there exhaust them outside the building. I may not even need an auxillary fan to get the fumes out, I have a drop down ladder to get up there along with a styrofoam insulating lid for the drop down ladder. When the fan is on full bore air whips around you when you stand at the top of the ladder.

After a bit of research I picked up the below, going to run this to a 4in vent in the ceiling. If it doesn't pull enough air with the 24in exhaust fan in the attic on I'll add a helper fan at the tip. Something heavy enough so I can set it down and not worry about it moving around too much.

Cheaper at HF, I had the 8" from them it's about $30, it's industrial quality. used it with their ventilator to vent out 70-years-old dust from knocking out ceilings in the basements.... works great.

Yeah I couldn't find the hose at HF, I remember seeing some people using it. Thanks for the links man. I'll see what I can rig up and take some pics of it when finished. I weld all over the shop and don't want to deal with filters so the goal is to vent it out of the shop. We'll see how it all comes together.

I weld all over the shop and don't really want to spend any floor space on something to push around. Hoping the ceiling solution has the right volume and CFM. Going to test it tonight and see how it goes.

Good news, looks like my theory panned out, took a 4in hole saw to the ceiling and afixed a 4in dry vent fitting up there. When I turn on the 24in attic exhaust fan it creates enough suction to pull a decent amount of air up into the attic.

The trick here is over kill on the attic exhaust fan and sealing up the insulated area really well so there is some vacuum.

Good stuff, but do you have to cut your way into the attic now (?!?!?) It looks like the access is spray-foamed in there...

Typically those are foam sealed boxes which cover the folding attic stairway. Push the box up and out of the way to get in. One of the best DIY ways to insulate a folding stair.

Yep, it's like a sarcophagus lid. You just move it out of the way if you need to get up there.
