DIY garage cabinets

So I am working in some wall cabinets. They are 12' long 48 inch tall and 2' ft deep. I started by attaching to the wall stud, but I got to thinking how in the world are these going to be strong enough to hold anything. I am going to put some dividers in so I hope that will help add some strength. Still have to build out from the top and attach to the ceiling. But will it be strong enough on the bottom? Any advice would be great. Thanks

I did pretty much the same thing that you are doing. I followed this article as a guide. I used 3/4" plywood for the bottoms and side supports and it is pretty strong.

Looks good, how did you attach to the ceiling?

#12 X 4.5" lag screws with a pilot hole if I remember correctly. They may have been #10. The biggest I could use without splitting the joists.

Did you screw or nail the frame together? Looks good, and that's what I am going for. I just hope I didn't spread it out to much to take away from the strength of it.

Glued and screwed. Again pilot holes to prevent the wood from splitting. Most of the strength in this type of design comes from the plywood sides and bottoms.

I like building the cabinets out of ply board and then screwing them to the studs. I use melamine for the face frame and doors (no painting)

It looks like you doubled up the 2x2 that would be attached to the wall

I overlapped the top and back frames. The back frame was screwed in first flush against the ceiling then the ceiling frame was screwed into the joists and the back frame.

What kind of doors do you want? Sliding or swing open? Either case, the same 3/4" plywood you use for sides & bottom could be used for the doors. For swing doors, you could trim out around the perimeter using a 1x4 to give it a frame if you wanted.

I did swing up doors for mine. I built a simple face frame out of 1X2s around the cabinet. The doors were simply a 1X2 frame with 1/4" plywood in the center. Some cheap hinges, a little chain, an S hook and an eyebolt and it was done.

Yours turn out great. I will do the door the same way. I want mine to open like regular doors.

Nice, but if they swing up to the ceiling like that you are probably much taller than the average guy, or using a ladder. Not to mention if your chain gets bumped the right way, that door is cracking you in the head.

Thanks. Regular doors will work better for yours since they are tall and closer to ground level. Mine are about 10ft off the ground so swinging up worked better for me.

Yep, I use a ladder. I mostly keep infrequently used stuff up there. It was otherwise wasted space in the from of the garage. Got to use every inch can!
