As it's been getting extremely hot again here in Arizona, and I've been doing a significant amount of work on my Corvette in the garage, I finally made the effort to make the garage survivable (and comfortable :) ).

First to get tackled was my metal, non insulated garage door on my two car garage, which measures 20x26 and 9' ceilings. The garage has two exterior walls that are not insulated, and the ceiling has some coverage near the entry into the interior of the house...but the builder didn't get hardly any coverage up near the garage door itself. The metal garage door, which also has 8 windows, faces due west and gets the full afternoon sun.

Last week, with ambient temperatures hitting 115*, the exterior of the garage door hit a blistering 169* ... the window glass came in anywhere from 115* to 139*. :shocking: Interior measurements on the door were anywhere from 135-140, with ambient temps in the garage of 110*

Next day, I went to Lowe's and purchased four 4x8 sheets of the R-Tech 1.5" rigid foam panels with the foil face on one side and the poly face on the other. I also purchased the heat reflective foil tape, some static cling Gila heat control reflective window tint, and several pieces of 1/8th inch clear polycarbonate. I was able to cut and fit the rigid foam panels within the recesses of all the panels, including cutting pieces to fit around the window frames. I placed metal foil tape on all the seams where the rigid foam made contact with the door framing, and even applied it to the exposed metal framing on the garage door where the hinges attached.

I applied the static Gila window tint to the windows, and then placed the polycarbonate on top of the rigid foam framing, which created a 2" vapor barrier. I then applied the Gila window tine to the polycarbonate window as well.

End result ?

With the night time low of 95* (at 4:54 a.m.), I opened the garage door to at least cool the garage down to ambient outdoor temps, then closed it at 7:00 a.m. before the temps started to rise.....the high this day hit 113+ .

I borrowed a friend's FLIR camera to augment my infrared laser thermometer readings, and also placed several standard outdoor thermometers around the garage to take readings at 3:30 to 6:30 in the afternoon/evening.

I'll claim success, in dropping temps below 97* with direct radiant sun hitting the garage door with no cooling apparatus other than a floor fan to circulate what air was in the garage.
Garage door opener, suspended at 8' off the floor showed 96*

FLIR, infrared, and standard outdoor thermometers ranged from a low of 90* , to a high of 100* measured on the metal hinges. Overall, I'd say low to mid 90's, with outside hitting 113+ ......

The following week, I installed a new 12K BTU 110v mini-split i picked up at a local online auction house.

After getting it mounted and having an a/c tech test my lineset for leaks, we charged the system and turned it on. To say that I was pleased to see the air handler discharging 36* air while ambient garage temps were in the mid 90's is an understatement !!!!!

I let it run all day and overnight just to see what it could do. Overnight temps were in the upper 80's, with a afternoon high of 109*. I had set the unit to 69* the night before, and what di you know......69* garage !!!!!!
It warmed to low 70's in the late afternoon sun, but to say I'm tickled pink would be an understatement. :bounce:

Pics aren't loading, but I am very curious and have a few questions:

1. Did you re-tension your garage door spring? I ask because I did the RTech sheet on my 1 car garage bay door, and it made it heavy enough that I was worried the opener would struggle on the 2 bay door....

2. Since I can't see pics, can you post a link to the window film you installed? Was it hard to install?

3. Did you leave the high/low vents unsealed which I assume you have in your garage?

I'm close to doing exactly what you did. I insulated 1 door, and it helped immensely, next step is to do the 2 car door, and install mini split or a window rattler... I'm done with a hot garage.

funny you should mention this. When I added the Rtech foam boards to my garage door after a about 2-3 months the spring broke and left me stuck outside. The boards feel like they are as light as air but I guess the just the little added weight is actually enough to do some damage. When I had the garagedoor guy come to replace the spring he used a longer (stronger) spring to compensate for the added weight.

No, I recently had new garage springs installed, but the weight of the 4 panels was a little over 9 lbs.

I do not have a high or low vent in my garage

I was dying in the garage before, with 110* ambient air and little ventialtion other than a floor fan.

I recently had a new garage door spring installed, so maybe that's the differnce

great job! I did a friends like that years ago. One of the things we found out was that it is helpful to re-adjust the door springs for the added weight. I know its not much weight, but for the door opener to live a long life, it good for the door to be properly balanced.

ok, last question I promise. What thickness RTech sheets did you end up using? Maybe mine was so heavy because I used the max thickness....

Big difference. Good deal. Insulating and sealing/weatherstripping gets you so far. But the elevated summer lows are killers. If I intended to spend a lot of time in my garage in the summer, I would be looking at AC.

- What was the total cost for you for the mini-split installation?
- Is it possible to figure out how much electricity you are using to cool that space?

It's probably a good idea to have a tech out to re-adjust the sping

I did the basic install myself, but had an a/c tech come out on site to test the line set, pressure and vacuum test, the release the R419A into the system...at a cost of $260.00.
I also had an electrician friend come out and run me a new 20A circuit for this unit....35' run of conduit and 10 gauge wire (in case I ever swap unit out for a 220V unit), plus shut off box, $150 in supplies and $60.00 for his labor.

The unit itself cost me $360.00 plus tax and bidder/buyer fee, which brought me to $425.00. I probably have $50.00 in supplies to insulate the line set and wall anchors to hold the lines on the wall.

All in all, I have about $900-950 into it.

As far as electricity cost, I kept the garage at 77* all last week as I was wrenching on my car, but my plan is to only run it that cool when I have plans to work in there. I'll probably turn it off or set the temp to 95* for the rest of the time

What is the difference between having the foil side of the insulation to the inside vs the outside?I would think the foil would reflect more being towards the outside but maybe I'm all wet. I am almost ready to do the same to my garage door.

The manufacture states it doesn't matter which side faces in or out....I prefer the look of the foil face over the white poly side with lettering on it.

"Which side of the R-Tech Panels should face inside?

Either side of the R-Tech panels can face inside. Generally people prefer to have the metallic faced side face the inside of a structure, but there is no advantage one way or the other."

https://www.insulfoam.com/basement-wall-insulation/

My thoughts are that with the foil facing inwards toward the door and making contact with the metal door, it would conduct some of this heat into the foam backer. With the poly side facing the metal door, the foam acts as a 1.5" insulator, with whatever heat that makes it thru would then hit the foil skin and radiate back.

But, i did it for aesthetic purposes
